3.6TDV8 mods?

I've seen a number of posts relating to EGR delete, remap and fitting a turbo drain. I'm in the process of buying a 3.6 TDV8 (2009 facelift with digital dish etc) so just wondering why these mods are done in terms of benefits i.e. Does it save the turbos?? Also what sort of costs would the mods incur? Any info appreciated.

Hi Ricardo, I "might" be buying an identical SE to you. Mine is a 2009 140k, new turbos, gearbox service, fsh negotioned £7400 but not much mot left. I see it next week to make a final decision, will find out about egrs and maps then. I keep getting told that the 4.4 is a lot better but this is a lot cheaper and as it will do lots of short trips no DPF!

Turbo drain is specific to 4.4 not 3.6.

EGRs tend to get removed and mapped out as they can cause turbo issues and when the turbos go, it fires bits into the engine, and then it’s just an expensive paper weight.

4.4 doesn’t have that worry, but does have DPF, which can cause issues if the car doesn’t get a run.

The last of the 3.6 had a DPF too I believe.

The 4.4 has more power, more torque and the 8 speed gearbox, but as you’ve seen this can be reflected in the higher asking price. You won’t get one for £7k.

Plenty of folk have had no turbo issues with their 3.6, but removing EGRs seems to help reduce any worry.

Yes I've looked at 4.4's but can't find one in great nick and reasonable mileage for the money. One I am looking at has only done 83k and has a full detailed service history. When were dpf's fitted from its reg date is 29/9/09? How much doe EGR removal cost roughly and what's involved?

A Trap

I didn’t remove my egr’s or map them out, I used the blanking plates, easy job and stops egr valve fragments going through the engine... another benefit is the oil is cleaner (less carbon/exhaust products getting in the oil) 👍

I don’t believe there is much difference in reliability in the 3.6 and 4.4, both have similar and bespoke problems between them, the main difference is age and possibly mileage due to age. You can get good and bad in both.

Bank on an alternator and gear box flush in your near future on either model... both have lots of electrical systems and put a massive strain on their alternators and life time oils is a myth put out to keep lease company’s happy with reduced service costs 👍

A 4.4 with its known issues won’t end up needing a new engine.

If the 3.6 has it’s known issues, it will, so they are definitely not similar reliability wise.

Whether you are unlucky to have the issues, that’s the gamble. The 3.6 gives no warning of turbo failures. The 4.4 just has oil leaks.

That said, as you say, you can block/map out the EGRs as they seem to contribute to the issue. I always though if you blanked them off it would go into restricted performance mode if they were not mapped out?

I mapped them out when I did it but subsequently read a few posts from people reporting that they didn't bother and didn't get an EML. Mapping them is belt and braces but if you have an IID tool you could try blanking and then only buy + apply the patch if you run into problems (thereby potentially saving £200ish). 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Thanks some good info and advice, bit clearer now. The one I'm looking at has new alternator, just had over £3k spent on it at Land Rover, Had phone/TV modules replaced as some water got in apparently. I've asked for gearbox flush and filter change as part of the deal which will be done. Sounds like blanking the EGR,s is a good move, is this a DIY job? I'm reasonable mechanically but no expert! Can it be done and then remapped by someone who can do it after?

A Trap

If you are talking 3.6.. the egr blanks are an easy job, about 40 minutes taking your time, no special tools. Theres some detailed posts on this forum.

And yes I didn’t get the egrs coded out or have any issues with codes or performance etc since they were installed.

Yes it is a 3.6. Will check threads out and see if it's ok for me to do! Thanks.
