In the end, the garage charged me £220+VAT for changing the four discs and sets of pads but did not fit the Caliper I provided or the pad wear sensors. They also charged me 0.6 of an hour to check the rh rear Caliper as the slider had seized. The total bill was £309.60 including £5 sundries (copper grease). The total for all the parts was around £260, so for me the killer is the labour charge. I had seen a video on YouTube on how to do it but I don’t possess a car jack or axle stands etc and as it is the brakes, feel better if a competent person undertakes that kind of job. Sadly, I had to replace all four tyres during October as all had perished/low tread depth. I chose Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres at £192 each (£768) so it has been an expensive month...! |

Don’t you have the vehicle jack? What are you going to do when you have a flat tyre and need to put the spare wheel on?

Might have been expensive mate but it was the safest option by sounds of it for you. Nothing wrong with opnely admitting that you'd need to watch you tube on how to do the brakes and you don't have the suitable tools so best to be safe n get someone else to do it mate. Braking area is not something you wanna be doing if your not certain on it all |

Yes I do have the jack but wouldn’t trust that to remain stable enough whilst removing brake discs without the benefit of axle stands. In my opinion, kit should only be used for what it is intended for - the jack is for lifting one part of the vehicle to facilitate the changing of a wheel. I would need a trolley jack and axle stands before contemplating doing any maintenance work where the wheels need removing. |

What was the final consensus on this? I have a seized rear calliper (single pot) and utterly pitted disks so my plan is to replace the entire back-end gubbage. I have the 4.4 petrol on an '06 plate (the awkward BMW crossover year) and there appear to be various FF 'standards'. Is there an easy way to determine what parts to order? I'll be looking for new callipers, pads and disks but is there anything else I should replace?

Billie, whereabouts are you inSW (no need to be shy). If you can, go to T&S Norman just south of Shepton mallet. there is no better and he won't rip you off! |
