Opinion please

Evening all

I've been out of a FFR for 3 years now.
I had a 4.4 autobiography which was sublime.

Thinking of getting back into a RR but unsure of my needs. I don't need a fast car. I need a reliable car that will be similar to my current Mercedes GLS the RR fits the bill but unsure of engine, I know the 3.0L is ok but is it a good choice over the 4.4

Thanks in advance

Hi Jason, hope you're keeping well!

I've read that the 3.0's handle better due to having less weight up front but the trade off is less grunt than the 4.4.

I believe the 4.4's have active anti roll bars whereas the 3.0's don't.

There's quite a lot of topics on the web about the 3.0 SDV6 crankshafts snapping, that alone would sway me towards the 4.4's as it's one less thing to go wrong.

I'm sure someone who knows a lot more then me will be along shortly!

I echo David's comments re. the 3.0l engine, however, being closer to retirement than starting my apprenticeship, the smaller engine, on paper, looks to be cheaper (make that less expensive) for RFL, fuel consumption etc, so if I was in the position of a new (to me) car, I would consider these quite important factors. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I looked at both a few months ago and went for the 4.4. Partly because it makes a noise that made the switch from an M Sport Exhaust equipped petrol V8 a bit easier but mainly because of the anti-roll system which makes a fairly big difference.

It's not as effective as the same type of system on my 7 series, which also used the cameras to read the road, but that wouldn't get very far off road so I understand the compromise. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I didn’t have the same dilemma.

I looked at the 3.0.
Looked at the 4.4.

Decided that the 4.4 was:

Faster
Had more power and torque for towing
Was a V8
Had bigger brakes
I know how to take a fair bit of stuff off the engine already.....
I knew if I got the 3.0 I would always think “should have bought the 4.4” There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I decided on the 4.4 also, for much the same reason as NorthernMonkeyJones.

Bit more oomph, didn't seem to be as much that goes wrong with them and especially the 2011/2012 cars have *all* the toys on which I liked - still seems to me like a modern car!

There is little evidence - posted on this forum (or that you’ll find on the internet based on lots of research I’ve done) - about the L405s with 3.0 TDv6 engines suffering crankshaft failure.. and for the odd one that did fail, they were replaced under warranty. An important point to note and as with any car, if you follow manufacturer’s service and maintenance schedules including using the recommended grade oils and lubricants, the chances of problems reduce and the chances of manufacturer’s support if problems do arise increase (for cars that don’t have a warranty).

The 3.0 diesel in the L405 is an excellent engine. Anyone thinking about it should try one and make their own mind up. A pleasure to own and drive though. Can’t fault it.

Thumbs Up

I don’t disagree Ryan. The 3.0 is a good engine generally, and having ready the research you’ve done I’m convinced that one wouldn’t spontaneously self destruct as soon at it left the dealers.

I had a mental play last week with a nice 3.0 in Firenze that they had at the local Stealer, just cos i was sat looking at my black one wishing it was red.....

The feeling passed especially given that to swap to the 66plate 3.0 vogue, with 30k would cost me about 9k.....🤷‍♂️ Not value for money really.... Whistle There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thumbs Up into 4th year of ownership with ours now and starting to think we should change it for a newer one but really don’t want to change it, it’s that good and is so nice inside and out, then keep thinking, what’s the point...

It’s all very exciting when you start thinking about swapping car.... but after a month or so of sitting in effectively the same vehicle, I can’t help feeling that you would wonder why you did it! Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
