One of those impossible personal questions, but always worthwhile hearing thoughts from others ....

My current car is due for renewal next summer. I've decided to return to the RR fold; my last was the L322 Westminster run out model. However, do I get another end of the line, L405 this time, or find an interim option to wait for the L460, that's the question?

I'm tempted to go with the current model, both because it's as yet uncertain as to when the new model will be available, but also chances are there'll be teething troubles (and I like the current shape - still undecided on the velar shape). If it sways comments, I'm looking at the 5L V8, which it looks like won't be available either in the new model.

Thoughts would be most welcome as I make my mind up.

I’d buy a 1 year old L405 and keep it until the new model is about 12 months old, then make a decision on changing. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

Agree, dodge the first year depreciation if you can.

There were some new pre-reg’s available earlier in this year. I expect they will return again before next summer. My last 2 RR’s were new pre-reg’s both with significant discounts. MY23 D350 HSE

If your considering a very very late L405 is that in the hope or expectation they have ironed out all the niggles?

I just wonder, as an ex-owner of an L322 Westie, did they iron-out all (ha!) or enough of the niggles toward the end of production to make it a really good car, in your view? Did you feel like it was a ‘sorted’ car? Much like the L405 is now? (Not implying that the ‘405 was never less than epic)

Personally, I like late production cars over a brand new generation launch.

Late L322 still had oil cooler gasket issues and turbo drain mod needed on some. So, run out models don’t always make sense  Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

L322 “Still” had oil cooler issues?....... it was the start of the 4.4 TDV8 engines run.... so brought new issues to the L322 at the end of its run.... unlikely that issue would have ever have been solved that quickly.

Hmmm, very good points. I certainly did have problems with my 2012 Westminster; was in the dealer 6 or 7 times for the EGR and they still couldn’t fix it (a sorry end to an otherwise wonderful 4 years - apart from the parking sensors failing on day one).

I guess my thinking was more about getting the current model when the new one is possibly months from being available. That said, I wasn’t a fan of the 405 when it came out, much preferring the lines of the 322. Over the years I now like the 405. So chances are it’ll take me a while to like the 460 by which time I’ll be ready to change (I tend to keep my main cars for c 4 years and then change - that way - whilst more expensive - it becomes more of a disposable item and bothers me less ( ) when things go wrong.

Hmmm - I thought most of the bugs were introduced for MY17.....

That certainly seemed to be the only MY that had multiple people on here rejecting new cars as the dealers couldn’t resolve issues after numerous attempts.

my17 would be the new infotainment introduction year... ... - .- -.

It's taken 30 months for them to sort out the infotainment on my MY2018. They installed a whole new 2020 system last month which (touch wood), is now behaving as it should have done when I bought it!! All LR cars from 1984

Those software issues are why I’ll hang on to my 2016 MY VSE for a while yet. Only 40,000 miles on it so good for years yet......

If you’re comfortable with the cost/affordability/depreciation etc. go for it. 👍

Seeing as you asked, I’d buy a low mileage used L405 from a dealer. That’s only because I just don’t think they’re worth the new price. Just my opinion though and based on my (pre-Covid) vehicle use.
