Now let me think Matt, who was it that introduced the fuel duty escalator?.......mmmmmm,eeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrr

Can't remember, give you a clue, they are the same people who gave us the 'Miracle economy' ' end to the tory boom and bust' which ended up with the biggest bust in living history. The same people who during this miracle boom, when tax receipts were at their highest, were still borrowing money, which is why, as usual, the tories have to come along, and as always after the loonies lefties have been in power, the tories have to put it right, and take the unpopularity.

Of course, by the time they put it right, and get the debt under control, probably labour will get back in, just in time to spend us back into massive debt again. What a ridiculous cycle. Banging Head

i completely agree about the problems labour caused, don't get me wrong we need to sort this mess out but keep hitting families with higher taxes, higher food and fuel prices is not the way to sort this problem out. People can only be squeezed so far before something breaks and instead of the country going bust decent hard working people will be the ones to go bust. For example if you look at the students problem why should students that want to work hard to try and further their knowledge and education so they can get good jobs in the future be punished with massive debts. I work in a large secondary school in the north west and over the last few months we have been giving the students the new guidelines on uni and the costs involved and in a survey carried out months before the uni tuition issue was raised we had 68% of our students that wanted to progress on to uni then in a survey carried out 2 weeks ago after students we given the new info from the government on uni fees we only have 44% of students considering going because they do not want to get in to such debt and we are taking about over £40,000+ of debt that like having to repay the cost of a house!! and has anyone thought how these students will be able to afford to pay back this loan and try to get on the property ladder?? upto £9000 per year for uni is stupid and you are only going to punish the middle class - rich kids are always going to be able to go, poorer kids will get financial help to go and as always the normal, working class person will be expected to pay the full wack.....typical!!

Very good point to which I would reply, why focus on student debt?

If we don't take the pain now, then your students will be paying back the debt for their entire working life anyway, regardless of whether they go to Uni. Why should we burden everybody with more debt, to subsidise those who will go to university, and earn more money. Why should people in the trades for example, be saddled with higher taxes for their entire working life, for somebody to go to university and become a bank manager?

We have to face the fact that if we don't have the money to spend, we can't borrow it to spend, the consequences will be too great. I have young kids, and I don't want them to be saddled with national debt which they'll have to pay forever, just because of our profligacy now. If you aint got it, don't spend it! It may not be nice, but it's reality.

As for people being pushed too far by the cuts, sorry I don't buy it. We're in one of the most prosperous periods of one of the most prosperous nations on earth. It's never nice to have less money year on year, but get real, we've got nothing to complain about, and should focus on how lucky we are. This is not exactly post war austerity! If fact, we could probably do with a lot more austerity to cut obesity and sloth! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

2010 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

One problem with student loans/debts that I don't think has been thought about by many is that if you have this whacking great debt hanging over you from paying uni fees, it has to be taken into account if you apply for a mortgage, reducing the chance of even more 1st time buyers from getting on the housing ladder because the banks/building societies will not accept an application when there is already a massive debt owed to another party these days................. It was all a brilliant Labour idea if I remember correctly................. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

... Pro fox hunting, pro any hunting really - in fact I think it should be law to hunt the lower class peasants we look down on from our high perch in the RR! Rolling with laughter

Oh, wait forgot about bug ridden dreadlock hair hippy protesters - they can be hunted too...! Rolling with laughter

And as for religion, I'm not buying it I'm afraid. It's an outdated mass society control cult.

Finally what about reintroducing slavery - it's the only right forward thinking approach.

(Health warning: just in case some cannot read the tone, this is a p*** take and not my actual views. Although I could be convinced) - Unfortunately this is needed these days as some people take things to literally and seriously. Chill, it's Friday and the sun is out.
