Time for a gearbox flush and other TLC items

Not been done in my ownership so thought it was time to give the old girl a bit of tlc. I experienced a bit of 1st gear slip last week so bought
1. Correct gearbox oil x20 litres
2. New filter n gasket
3. New radiator
4. Fluids for the diff

I havnt had any over heat messages or anything else the service history shows a new rad and oil cooler in 2017 and gearbox oil all carried out by a specialist company.

With 20 litres of new oil I can do a couple of flushes before fitting the new filter and final oil change of the gearbox.

Did my first drain of the sump and refill all went ok I had a look around in my garage and found a new fuel pump for a freelander an old bike battery and a bit of hose solder a couple of wires to the pump and job done. Only took a few seconds to pump a litre of fresh gearbox oil in one at a time so I could see how much went in compared to what came out.
Will do the same again on thursday after iv done a few miles and again next week with the new filter. Then get the rad and diff oils swopped out.

5HP24 in mine it's the 4.4 petrol so usually a pretty good box. The old oil came out black. As I'm doing a bit of tlc on the old girl it's getting a new rad and I'm gonna flush the oil cooler out and check the oil lines as iv had a mystery oil leak I cant find since iv had the car.

2nd flush completed today gonna run around in it for a bit before doing the final refill and filter change.

The oil cooler isnt leaking nor are the oil feed pipes to it I'm holding off swooping out the rad at the moment new one sat in the garage.

Completed my 3rd and final flush plus filter change today. Gearbox silky smooth. I improved on my previous method of refilling by using a 10 litre garden spray bottle connected to my electric pump.
Job done just the diff left as I did the transfer box last week.

Jim - you're right. I got a buzz around doing my oil and filter change on the 4.4 using my 10L vacuum suction pump. Very clean and easy to do. Highly recommend it over dropping it out of the sump.
I left Bodsy to Megaflush my 8 speed though - with his fancy machine Bow down
Need to change my PAS fluid - think of just decanting out of the tank and topping up with new. Then repeat. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

PAS fluid change

There's a good South Main Auto video Eric O posted recently where he did a 100k service on a Mazda 6. He just sucked out the PAS fluid from the reservoir, actuated the steering and repeated until the fluid looked clear - see from 13:40 in this video:



I've learned so much by watching his videos, he's a great mechanic and teacher. Ditto Jim White at White Details.

DO NOT touch those plastic clips that hold the pipes on the cooler. After 3 days outside the factory, they turn to glass and disintergrate when so much as looked at. You then need the whole bloody pipe as clips are not available separately . Ask me how I know......

I have no intention of touching them.once I found out there not the cause of my oil leak. I even bought the propr bmw removal.tool just incase.
My leak is higher up on the front just cant find it !!!!!

Both diffs done today 1 litre of milky old diff oil from the rear and 750 mils of clear but dark oil from the front. Used my electric pump to refill both.
Job done.

Will get back to my head liner soon at some point. Gonna drop some new discs on and an outer cv gaiter as I found a split one.
