Help: steering wheels switches not working.

I have a problem with my steering wheel switches.

Initial symptom = no horn. After removing airbag assembly, steering wheel, cowl and clock spring, I found that earthing the red/brown wire from the rear of the clock spring did nothing. Eventually found horn supply fuse blown in engine bay fuse box.

Re-assembled everything, horn OK but now no other steering wheel switches working - they all were before.

Replaced clock spring assembly with secondhand unit - no change except horn not working again from switches (but OK from earthing lead so not fuse again) and suspension and parking brake errors

Ordered replacement, secondhand air bag assembly. Still no switches working and still suspension and parking brake errors.

In both cases above, all clock spring lever switches are working OK (indicator lever, wiper lever and column adjuster). Now at a total loss as to what’s next.

Any ideas? I think it could be a faulty clock spring assembly but have doubts since the symptoms are identical with both assemblies. Or could I be missing somewhere a lack of common earth for the airbag assembly?

This is going from bad to worse!

Car started OK this morning but switch problems still the same.

Now I cannot get the key to turn in the ignition. Rocking steering wheel doesn’t help, so it appears to be electrical.

Just to add to my woes, I have a large crack just appeared in the driver’s door glass!!!

Update.

After taking the beast to Rovertune, and paying £546 to ransom it, the problem turned out to be a cable with chafed insulation intermittently shorting out on the engine management ECU.
