The only thing that comes to mind as a possibilty is a heat shield bolt. John

The only thing that came to my mind is that I have a very OCD mate & I need to start leaving bolts on his drive - it will send him nuts |

That is (the remains of) a stud, that secures the rear AC/coolant/ARC pipes etc |

If you look under your car you will find lots of rusty looking things .
