2002 M62 V8 petrol timing tool Vanos cam position

I'm currently removing my heads to replace the headgasket.

I have the cams in the position as per the attached image and the crank at Top dead centre

Although the timing CMP sensor ring doesn't line up with the timing tool that I have, which I admit is a Chinese tool.
The pin is a couple of centimetres out.

So, should I

a) mark the sensor ring as it is with the timing tool that I have for when it comes to reassembly

or

b) use the timing tool to correctly reposition the CMP sensor ring on reassembly (no timing faults have come up on OBD)

or

c) am I missing some sort of nuance here?

And for a bonus point can anyone advise if I can remove the heads with my rather rusty exhaust manifold still attached!?
