I’ve just received a new key for my 06MY 4.2 SC from Duckworths and its not unlocking the steering lock and won’t turn in the ignition.

I have successfully synced it to the car along with my other two keys – so now all three keys are locking and unlocking the doors when I press the key fob buttons.

I spoke to someone at Duckworths who went to ask a technician and he said “It needs to be introduced to the car with a diagnostic tool” which sounded a bit airey-fairy to me.

I put it to him that I was under the impression keys came from LR already coded to your VIN and all that was needed was for them to be synced to the car which I’ve done without issue.

Anyone had a similar problem or could offer an explanation as to what might be wrong? 2006MY 4.2 SC

There is a chip in the key that activates the barrel to allow you to turn the key.

If you hold another working key by the barrel with the new key in the barrel, what for the little unlock noise and then try to turn the key, if it turns and starts the car then 100% the chip is not coded to the car.

The only question then is -- should Duckworths have supplied it with the chip coded, that's a question you'll have to ask them!

Does the key physically open the driver's door?
In my case the key used to make the duplicate was worn but would open the door but not in the ignition and the only way was the garage to obtain a code from LR and it was inputted into their machine which produced an original key. Range Rover 4.2 SC
2 Range Rover Classics - one from new but both rusty now.

Fully agree with the above, just to add, if you open the key to remove the battery, you are looking for a small black magnet! The size of a small eraser ✏️ on the back of a pencil... You can pull them out easily enough! Maybe swap it for one in a working key and prove the theory before speaking to Duckworth 👍

OH and BE CAREFUL not to drop said magnet as they are tricky little things! Remove it over a dinner tray is my top tip
