Can you knock a 12mm ring spanner or socket onto it? You might want to have a replacement on hand before you remove it though. |

Do you have a hot air gun by any chance? More gentle than gas but could well work. |

+1 with Stan, get a syphon pump, you will never do an easier, cleaner, quicker oil change, and never need to struggle getting the sump plug out again.

To be fair, JLR made/installed the service tube to suck the oil out... They were never designed to drop the oil out from below... |

And for anyone reading this in the future? Only ever use a 5 sided wrench/spanner/socket to loosen any sump bung! ๐ |

5 sides? How about single hex rather than double hex or 12-point? |

I gave in and the sump guard was enough to dent my ego! Steel and aluminum never a good match!

Get someone with a TIG (or a MIG) to weld a 17mm nut on the sump plug. The heat will help release the plug and the larger spanner size will help allow more torque ๐ |

But the engine was designed to have the oil sucked out! If you suck the oil out then remove the sump bung, you won't get much more than an egg cup of cleanish oil out! |

Of course they were designed to have the oil dropped from below, Craig. That's why the sump plug is there They were designed to have the oil drained via either methods. It's worth mentioning that in marine engines, the oil is always sucked out because there is no way to drop it out from below. It is a safe enough method of changing the oil. Personally, I always drain from below because I take the opportunity to have a look around and check everything is in order at the same time. Horses for courses.
