Hi, I'm a young driver 22, turning 23 in a few months, living in London. I'm planning on getting a 2013+ Range Rover in the next few months, I ran a check to see if I can get insurance & there's absolutely no quotes at all! Anyone want to suggest any ways that a young driver could get insurance? Brokers? Family? Any other ways?

Sounds like it will be expensive!

I am with “A Plan insurance” (there might be some links in this site) or google for info.

They are pretty good at high risk - would be a good place to start.

Try a broker, make them work for their money and find you a quote, don't be scared to ask them to contact the underwriters and have a barter over price...  Pete

This may sound mad, Adrian Flux, declare your Range Rover model and modify it quite a bit eg, stage 1 cams, mapped etc etc and you may be surprised. When my boy was 17 he had a Fiesta and was paying £2500 fully comp, he fitted a 1700cc PUMA engine, big exhaust, lowered suspension the works. Adrian Flux insurance £970 fully comp. He later changed to a standard 1300 Fiesta and they wouldnt insure him.

Really! That's crazy! I'll check it out How do I modify it after buying and without having to pay insurance, nor be liable to do so? With a SORN while its in the garage?

I think the reality of the situation is that they have a huge aversion to a relatively new driver getting behind the wheel of a very big, very heavy car, capable of creating immense carnage and destruction.
Small cars going fast are 1 thing, very big cars doing the same multiply the potential for the insurance company to have immense payouts.

You could also try adding an older driver with a good insurance record as a named driver, that usually makes a big difference, even if they will never drive it.

My 18yr old nephew added his dad and his quotes halved overnight!!

I think others have pretty much summed it up already - it ain’t going to be cheap and it ain’t going to be pretty...

If you genuinely ‘have’ to have a L405 in London, then expect to have your pants taken down and get roundly spanked for the necessary insurance!

My thoughts would be to look at Bell - they are part of Admiral and specialise in younger driver insurance with the fitment of a black box which you would typically have for 3 months. Depending on your driving style, you then stand to get a (small) discount after the initial 3 month period and they also award an initial NCB after just 10 months, allowing you to benefit quicker when you come to renew.

Admiral might also be worth a try if there are other family cars - do it on a multi-car policy but I think Bell would be your best bet in the first instance.

Or, you could be patient & do what many other young drivers do - get a small run about, use it for a couple of years, gain some experience & NCB.

London is a massive part of the problem as well with an RR, due to risk of theft and other insurance considerations.

I bought my 2011 L322 5.0 S/C when I was 32, with a flawless diving history and no claims discount since I was 17, and that still costs me nearly £1000/year in London (Canary Wharf), and there wasn't a huge choice of insurers. If it was at my home in Poole, Dorset would be more like £300-400/year.

I started this vehicle with Admiral, then MoreThan offered a very competitive quote for 1 year, and am now back with Admiral again. My previous TD5 Defender 110 SW only cost £350/year insurance in London, but my wife persuaded me to swap for something more "comfortable"!

Have you tried the NFU, all of my cars are insured with them and they are brilliant. my daughter has a 4.8 Turbo Porsche Cayenne and shes only 24 and no problem insuring her and cost was good, maybe because i have 8 cars insured with them helps ?

Not sure NFU will cover a car kept in London cheaply. They like covering stuff in rural areas or market towns. I’ve got car and home cover with them. Good on Land Rover, but pricey on the Mini JCW which insured with Allianz.

As Brian says, ask yourself if you really need such a car in London at your age. At 23 I was driving around London in a leggy Triumph Acclaim. Cheap as chips, reliable and got the NCD down. Meant when I could finally get my hands on a decent car I’d got max NCD and I’d moved out of London so didn’t get rogered for insurance.

If you really want one and can afford to meet a premium measured in £000s then go for a broker. Expect an eye watering premium and huge excess and almost certainly the requirement of a secure tracker.

Agree with above but if you can afford it and it's what you want whose to say no?
