On the 405 do the rear callipers have the handbrake actuator integrated in them?

Looking at doing my front and rear discs in the next few weeks and was thinking if they are an integrated Caliper the job on the rears May be more straight forwards than the 322 with the park brake in the drum.


Edit, just had a look and yes they seem to.

Have now remembered I have the WM only thing I can’t see is if there is a way to calibrate the EPB manually wothout a diagnostic tool. There is a method for putting them in service mode, and releasing it but can’t see the way to calibrate it.....

Also chaps, anyone know if the callipers have a screw down piston or a push in piston, all my cars have had push in ones up to now, but I will need to get me a Cali per wind back tool if they are screw in. It doesn’t specify in the WM, it normally says there is a “special” tool required if you need one, but there is just a pic of an arrow. So I’m assuming they are press home callipers.

Anyone know?? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Need to do mine soon, so have probably read the same as you. I don’t think they need calibration just the following, happy to be corrected if anyone knows better.

You have to activate an e-brake service mode... Procedure is as follows:
- Turn the ignition ON (not the engine) by pushing the start/stop button without stepping on the brake pedal
- Push the e-brake button down for 2 seconds and hold it (release the e-brake)
- Push the accelerator pedal down for 2 seconds and hold it
- Push the start/stop button twice (turn the ignition off and on)
Now the e-brake service mode is active.. you will hear a noise from the rear e-motors, when its releasing the e-brake to the service mode. Still hold the e-brake button and the accelerator pedal.
After the e-motors stops there will be info on the dash that the e-brake service mode is activated.


To deactivate the service mode is the same procedure, the only change is that you have to pull the e-brake button.

To answer both questions, we have the correct diagnostic tool so always use that to put the vehicles into and out of service mode but i see no reason why the procedure above wouldn't work... If you do NOT do the job correctly (placing vehicle into correct service mode) then you will brake the calliper internally! The piston just pushes back, we use a brake pushing tool but i guess anyway you can push the piston will work oh and yes, the emergency/hand brake is the calliper not in an internal drum sir...

That’s pretty much what I thought. Have got myself a cheap rewind tool as I don’t want to damage the plastic bits on the back. Will work well enough for me. Have done many pads swaps now, but the last set was the first I had encountered on a Honda with screw in callipers.....

The method Dave describes above is the one out of the WM so should work a treat. It’s down as the way to do it if no diagnostic tool is present, so the step to recalibrate the EPB afterwards seems to be redundant as that requires the use of a diagnostic tool, so nonsensical.

After some conflab I’ve found out that the current pads in the LR Boxes are TRW, as confirmed by looking at the ones on my car...... so I’ve ordered a set of TRW cotec pads off of the internet from AUTODOC, And will get onto robin for a set of gen discs, should have the whole job done for £400. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks Craig, I have just bought a diagnostic tool which says it will do the Parking brake service, so i will be trying it out when the time comes, if all else fails its back to the handbrake button and cycle the ignition switch

Which one did you get Dave? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Got the Autel MD 806 Pro. Very impressed up to now, had an airbag light on which it steered me straight to, (wiring fault behind the drivers airbag).I've only used it the once but it does do a full system scan which is useful, and displays live data so you can watch whats going on with intermittent faults. I'll post more as I get to use it more, not too often on mine though I hope

LR discs have arrived from Duckworth parts.

Robin accidentally sent me the ones for my old 322 on Friday, which is an ideal opportunity to compare.

Even though the fronts use the same calliper setup the discs on the 405 are in fact different. So no one buy the 322 discs thinking they will fit. They won’t.

The hub face on the 322 has about 20mm more offset than the 405, which means the bell in the middle is a lower profile on the 405. the rotors themselves are the same size and thickness obviously as they use the same 6 pot.

The rears are completely different design. On the 322 there is a built in brake Drum on the centre of the disc. Whereas the rear for the 405 is more like a front disc as the EPB is on the caliper.

Would have taken some side by sides but the 322 ones are packed up awaiting collection.

Also arrived today are the TRW pads for the front and rears. I will do a few pics of these against the Land Rover pads when I take them off. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Check how much free room you have where the front pads fit NMJ... The 6pot callipers have a tendency to expand somewhat and clamp the front pads!

they went in nicely. Although I made the same mistake as last time and don’t order a wear sensor...will have to pop to the LR parts desk later and get one as it wouldn’t come out without snapping..

Interestingly the fronts which came out were Jurid pads, so I reckon LR is still on Jurid fronts. Which are unavailable at the moment. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
