I've been following this guy Nut Job (hi if you read this forum) since his TDV8 L322 series.

He bought the L322 very cheap, fixed what was wrong, cheap but quite thorough work. All done on his drive which made a good series on YouTube.

He since bought an ex-Police 5 series BMW which he has been fixing up bit, new timing chain for example.

He just posted this:



So at 177k, with Police miles and the comprehensive servicing that goes with it, the 5-series has spat a main bearing.

I guess you get the impression that the German makes are more reliable. Hell, who hasn't wondered, even for a second, "should I have just bought one of the Germans". Most of our wives/partners certainly have!

But Nut Job's experience tells me otherwise. 177k miles isn't silly high.
Yet IMO spitting a main bearing at 177k is abysmal reliability.

And makes me wonder are our beloved Range Rovers all that unreliable.

I subscribe to this guys channel too, nearly left when he bought the BMW and was planning to sell the RR. Thankfully though he kept it and there is the promise of some more stuff to come. I have to say that the BMW has been more problematic that I thought it would be, however, the latest incident could be classed as self-inflicted as it was running fine prior to his desire to get it re-mapped. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

I’m probably going to regret saying this, but I’ve owned 8 Land Rovers in the last 20 years and not one of them has left me stranded at the side of the road.

Including a couple of road trips to Southern Spain in a 20 year old Classic. Several trips to the Artic Circle in both a P38 and a D3.

Reading some of the stories on here I do think I’m probably one of the luckiest Land Rover owners around

Only owned mine for a few months, and not driven it that much due to Corona Virus, but ahem yes this has been my most unreliable car so far I'm afraid to say...But it also does have a certain charm to it that makes me forgive it. It wasn't a lot of money (1BTC effectively) and it is fun and powerful, but I think I wouldn't buy one again more expensive unless it is brand new with full warranty.

I've had 4 FFRR in the last 12 years.

1.1999 P38 2.5D. Fine but slooooooow
2. 2002 L322 TD6. Perfect. Never went wrong in 4 years. bought 2009 with 76,000 miles. 130,000 when sold to a mate.
3. 2004 L322 4.4 V8 Petrol AB. Bought from forum 2011 with 135,000. Now 189,000. water pump went (twice). Chain guides replaced (£3,000). Still got it. Lovely car.
4. 2011 L322 4.4 TDV8. Bought 2017. 83,000 miles. Now 101,000. Ran perfect for 2 years then had cracked inlet manifold causing DPF probs. Replaced for £1600 + £250 for DPF clean. Now running perfect.

So yes, about 5-6 major incidents over 4 cars but the only cars I have ever had without any probs is a VW Golf and an Audi A3. but much prefer the driving experience of the FFRR. Can't imagine driving anything else really, not even a merc or Touareg.

Its the increasing complexity of the sensors and electronics which is the downfall of modern cars I reckon??

BMW don’t do good bottom ends.....


There are a good few M3s And M5s with bottom end bearing shell problems. So reliability wise I really can’t see how there is much difference between the manufacturers.

The testing regimes they subject the cars to nowadays is pretty comprehensive, does it follow that they should have similar failure rates? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
