United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue
Hampshire based and potential L332 owner

Hello all

As I said in my intro post I’m a Hampshire based prospective L332 owner. I’ve narrowed my choice down to a 2009 to 2012 Vogue/ Vogue SE with either the 3.6 or 4.4 TDV8. Is there anyone in Hampshire who may be able to let me come and have a chat with them about their TDV8 and let me see what I’m getting myself in to - turbo drains, coolant hoses, rust spots, using the IID tool etc etc.

This all started when I had the chance to drive an L320 a few years ago and the idea won’t leave me. I’m already well used to Land Rover life as I have a 1982 Series 3 SWB petrol so I’m not afraid about getting stuck in with repairs and maintenance.

So far this forum and the search button have been amazing for advice and knowledge so thank you to everyone who takes time to add their info and hopefully one day I may be able to add to it all too.

Cheers
Ben

Read this as it highlights the main issues I encountered.
Oil leaks from engine is main one to look for. Oil cooler, oil pump or turbo. I had all 3.
Turbo drain mod is done on motors that smoke when booted. Not all smoke and need it. Look in mirror when you boot it.
I can help remotely (phone etc) but not in person at moment due to obvious. Being a biologist I have a different view to Boris and his 2m “guide” Rolling Eyes Whistle Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Rob, thank you for the thread link and also your offer of remote help. Currently I won’t be going anywhere near a vehicle to view but I am lining up a few to go and see when this all calms down. If they sell before I get there then no worries at all. I’m in no rush.

There seems to be a rather large difference in price between a 3.6 and a 4.4 but until I’ve test driven them I won’t be able to make up my mind!

Your thread DrRob is a brilliant read and a real eye opener on what to look for. So far, I have seen three L322's that I want to go and look at. Sadly to Covid restrictions I won't be able to view them yet but good things come to those who wait.

If anyone else has seen this thread and wants to chip in here are the current candidates. The first two (dealer 1st link, private 2nd link) are a little over my budget and will leave me with nothing in the pot, but are 4.4TDV8s and are local to me.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-4-4...2972628427

The third is a forum car, nearly bang on budget but is a 3.6TDV8.

I'm genuinely torn between a 3.6 and a 4.4 from reading everything on here. They both have their issues - EGR's and turbos on 3.6's, belts, pulleys, oil coolers, turbos on 4.4s. I must say I like the colour combo of the Ipanema Sand and Arabica interior, it seems different.

Cheers,
Ben

Using lockdown time to do research is a real bonus as you can build a list of what to look for Thumbs Up
I'd be erring towards the 4.4 in Pompey...and it's closer than Cornwall although I always prefer a forum car if looked after.
If you go and see it (or any!) then check for oil leaks from the oil cooler. IF they let you: remove engine cover, remove air box (2 x 13mm nuts) and scuttle rubber seal. Look into top of the V where the oil cooler is (oil filter housing screws into it). Look at the back of the cooler where the famous pipe that leaks. There is a thread on here somewhere with all this in. Cooler and surrounds should be clean with no oily residues. Also look underneath for an oily engine undertray.
Offer still stands for a video chat anytime. I can "tour" you round mine whilst you read off my list Rolling with laughter

go 4.4 TDV8.

This is also a nice one. They should fetch c. £11k at current demand. so you have some bargaining power!!

Mine wasn't perfect, it was used but very, very well sorted with good history and I couldn't get anything like that price. Good luck if they can but I somehow doubt it. BMW i3 Electric Car

Champion, cheers for the heads up Dolphinboy. The one thing that stands out is the "Supercharged" badge on a 4.4 TDV8

Cheers John. It seems that the 3.6/ 4.4 debate can go on for ever. Until this lockdown ends and I can test drive one of each, I won't be able to make a decision! The main thing I have learnt after all the research and reading is buy one that has been looked after.
