Hi team,

I have a stubborn threaded retaining ring like this:



I've been trying to tap it counter clock it with a small hammer and bradawl but it's not shifting.
The tap-with-something-like-a-bradawl technique does usually work but this only applies pressure to one of the two slots and it's chewing up the slot a bit as the ring is brass.

I found something called a hook spanner, but these are for when the slot is on the outer circumference unlike mine. Seems bikes use these a bit.

Have tried googling a bit but it's often when you don't know the name it's a bit fruitless.

Is there a specific tool for these? Cheers, Greg

A pin spanner will do that, can make your own with a suitable piece of steel and some nuts and bolts.

An old tool handle thats 3 or 4 mm thick will do, and bolts that will fit into the slots.

Mark out 2 holes the distance apart of your 2 slots, drill holes so bolts will go through and use nut to lock them in place.

Pin spanner!!
