First Failure - Cranks but wont fire - Td6

Well I guess it had to happen.. After just over a year of trouble free ownership the FF has let me down.

Having been running fine with no issues, I noticed on the last couple of starts it would need cranking for a bit longer, or even a second go but would then start. It was still running perfectly with no roughness, power loss or anything else troubling.

Then it failed to start. It still cranks strongly but not a a hint of running.

Popped it onto IID and there is fuel pressure on both and high and low side. Its is seeing the RPM, and using either key makes no difference.

The only recurrent fault code is not recognised by the IID but is 0x09F6 (i think, i've mislaid the bit of paper I scribbled it down on).

I've now had it recovered to the garage but where should I suggest they look first.

It appears that the car is choosing to not run, rather than being unable to so sensor somewhere or immobiliser?

Many thanks

Does point to a fuel pump but you say you have pressure.

Possibly the injector loom, this can pack up and provide the symptoms, unlikely to be the injectors themselves....

Has fuel filter been changed recently, have you tried checking if fuel is delivered when cranking, or ignition on? .

I had 2 faulty injectors on my TD6, but that gradually got worse over a few months, and then suddenly in about 4 days wouldn't start.

So it seems to be a different symptom if you had no warning, as such.

When I had a fuel pump fail I had no warning. Drove to work fine, but then wouldn't start to come home. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Hello,
The easy and definitive diagnosis for this issue:
Possibility 1: turn ignition on, but do not crank -> check low pressure pump pressure -> if less than 2bar -> low pressure inline pump faulty.
Possibility 2: crank -> rail pressure does not exceed 120bar (condition for engine start) -> injector faulty due to leaking return valve seal.

Of course, as always, there are other more exotic faults, but these two will explain 9/10 TD6 crank-but-no-start issues.

Hi folks, thanks for the advice so far.

The garage have diagnosed low pressure on the fuel rail, and conducted the injector leak test. So far 4 injectors look suspect.

Guess this is about to become an expensive fix. I'm just surprised since it was running like a dream before...

Ho hum. Thats Rangerovers!

Well its ups and downs. The injectors have all been serviced and cleaned and declared within specification. Suspicion now turns to the High Pressure Pump and regulator. So I'm hoping its the cheap and O-ring fix.

The garage did the 'o ring' fix whilst the car was already in bits from removing the injectors.

Its back to running like a dream! Great to have my FF back on the road. It can't have done any harm to have the injectors cleaned and serviced though whether it was actually necessary I don't know.

Hello everyone, I have the exact same problem/error code All 6x injectors were changed.

What is this O ring fix?

I am guessing it is on the solenoide on the HP fuel pump.

Does someone have a part number or where to buy?

Alex.

Is the O ring fix something that TD6 owners should be looking at as preventive maintenance?
