Sides

Hi all

Sometimes I need to buy spares and the info cames with this: Near side or off side.
Can you explain to me these expressions please?

Cheers

Antonio

In the UK

Nearside usually means the side nearest the kerb or passenger side. Therefore left hand side on a right hand drive car.

Offside usually means the opposite, therfore nearest the centre of the road.

So facing forward

Nearside left
Offside right Cheers
Richard

What RJFF says ^

It also avoids confusion when talking about left and right, as that will depend on whether you are looking at the car from the front or the back.

I explained this to my son some time ago and simplified it by telling him that he only had to remember that offside is always the driver side, regardless of whether it was a left or right hand drive car.

Stand behind the car looking towards the front

Left is on the left, Right is on the right, this doesn't change when you have your head under the bonnet looking towards the back of the car!

Agree with Rob99, offside is Driver's side, nearside is Passenger side. .

Ah but;

both my FF and ML are RHD and I live in France,
thus my steering wheel is always kerbside.

So my driver side is nearside and my passenger side is offside.

Unless I'm reversing with the flow of traffic from the otherside. Confused L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue. 07MY
