Interior trim and rust

Sorry two completely different subjects and yet both quality issues....

Every interior trim panel I have removed has very poor quality fixings, many have bent or broken pins/clips, probably caused by previous owners but maybe from new. In my opinion they are just too flimsy for cars of this price, when I compare with my MY 2000 vw golf I cannot believe how poor they are. I had many items of trim removed and replaced with no issue with broken or bent clips/tabs etc. In my mind the VW parts were far better quality.

Also as regards rust, my Golf has no rust at all and yet my RR suffers from wheel arch rust something that I expect to only occur with 1970's/80's cars. To get perforation issues on a 2006 car is just totally unexpected especially on a car that originally cost 70-80k

As far as the rust is concerned and because of the covid-19 problems I cannot get the car to the body shop so I will put on my cowboy boots and hat and fix the problem with glass fibre and filler in an effort to halt the rot until the body shops open again.

I know I am not alone on this forum with these kind of issues but it still grates that these issues can occur on a car of this quality/cost.

My last Land Rover was a Discovery 2 and I had none of these issues so what has happened for quality to fall to this extent?

Trim clips usually fail due to lazy folk not lining the trims properly and just wacking it... Having said that they do get brittle with age, I tried to wait for a warm day to pop trims or leave the heater on full for a while to warm it up...

IMHO You are doing the job twice if you patch it up with fiberglass, all you will do is lock in moisture that will sit behind your nice finish and do more damage than if you had left it alone... if you want to do something then treat the rust with Dinotrol it will keep it subdued until you can get it done properly...

The later 322's were actually worse for rust...!! Pete

Yes I agree with the aging but some of the "tabs" are very thin and insubstantial, I used my wife's cooks blow torch to soften some of the bent clips and in one case to weld the "tab" back in place.

Yes totally agree, its not what I want to do, but as I am in the Highly vulnerable group I cannot see myself getting to the body shop for many months, so I have to do something. I am treating with rust converter and am trying to spray it inside the cavity. Its a shame that repair panels are not available for the outer arch, otherwise I would do the job myself, my welding skills are ok but my panel beating skills just don't exist. Range Rover 4.2 Supercharged 2006

Could you not arrange for the body shop to collect it once they re-open?
You'll be investing a lot of time and effort into something that you'll never be happy with

I would imagine that some body shops will be starting to function again soon if not already. Personally I would leave it alone bar a bit of rust treatment etc. Putting fibreglass and filler on it isn’t a good idea it will just bodge it up a bit......

If you want to protect it to stop water getting in then clean it up, and get some waterproof tape to put over it for the time being. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
