Little question for you all

Hi guys
What are your thoughts on the 2005/2006 4.4 v8 and gearboxes
I want the 4.2sc but the wife wants to be put on the insurance and it's coming out way to much for the sc
So what's the forum opinion on the 4.4 v8

Cheers Phil Thumbs Up

Beautiful engine, but suffers from timing chain & tensioner wear. Gearboxes are fragile but all in all, they’re ok. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

In 2006 they changed the BMW to a 4.4 Jaguar unit, the AJV8, supposed to be a very reliable motor with less problems than the early one... Pete

I lose track - so that age would put you into the Jag 4.4 rather than the BMW 4.4 ?

The Jag engine seemed to get very good reviews except for LPG conversions - the BMW's seem to handle gas better.

United States 2014 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Causeway Grey

had a 2008 jag 4.4L and engine was solid. Traded it in at 200k miles. Tranny started acting up around 180k miles wouldn't like shifting into 5th so I kept it in 1-4...4th on highways. Killed the MPG but was drivable. What I hear the bearing in there goes bad. $5 part but tranny needs taken apart $$. 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

What sort of prices are being quoted, and from which Insurer? They are not normally prohibitive. Tony

United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue

I paid £260 for this years insurance for my SC, that's fully comp with my wife covered as well, in fact it was more without her as a named driver. If I remember right it was only about £30 more than a 4.4 quote I had, so I thought very good value.
Although I notice you are in London so probably much more. Range Rover 4.2 Supercharged 2006

Strange how the Sc is so much more than the Normally aspirated engine. It’s a bit quicker but that’s about all....

The AJV8 is the one to go for over the BMW engine. It doesn’t suffer from the chain guide wear by all accounts, that said there are a lot less of them about as that’s the time the 3.6 tdv8 came out and loads of buyers went for that instead of a petrol, whereas the Bmw petrol vs the td6 was an easier descision.

The gearbox on the ajv8 is fundamentally the same as in the SC and engine wise they are quite similar iirc.

If you can find a decent one then go for it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
