I need four. New tyres on my 05 SC. Have always had Michelin’s which are ok, but would like to see what others are running on standard 20 inch wheels? Ideally need to be able to be used in snow as well for the winter. My Michelin’s have the Mud and Snow symbols on them and have always been very good.

Pirelli now have a new Scorpoin Zero out which is now an all season tyre. Not run it yet but it will be on the list. I’m running scorpion verde on both the disco (on my old Fattie wheels) in 255 50 20 which seem to have been good and on the 405 in 275/45/21. They are also all season, though tbh the M and S and all season labelling is a bit misleading. Tbh I didn’t find them much better than my old school Scorpion Zero tyres over winter this year.

You won’t go much wrong with a set of the old Scorpion zero tyres if you can find a set. They are what was originally fitted to the 322 and though they are an old design now I ran them on the 322 and they were good. They are also m and s but not all season.

Presumably you’ve been running mich latitude diamaris, also ran these for several years, and was very impressed with the wear rate. Much of a muchness between those and the Pirelli. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Tyres are a constant trade off.....

Mud & Snow just means an open tread block pattern that allows the tyre to 'self clear' - so they are good in fresh snow. However, it doesn't mean they are good on ice, or even a cold wet road - that's where winter tyres come in - rubber with a higher silica content that remains flexible to lower temperatures and sipes in the tread blocks to create extra grip (and heat).

However, winter tyres are worse at dry braking - even in the cold.....

I found the Michelins on my L322 to be pants in the winter - great in the summer, but I switched to Vredesteins for the winter.

It depends whether you want one all round tyre or 2 sets.....

Assuming one all rounder, then the Pirelli Verde in 255 55 20 seem to be a popular option - slightly higher sidewall, but a standard size for the L405 so seem more widely available at a better price than 50 profiles.


There are loads of videos out there that try to explain things - but there are so many variables - and everyones circumstances are different - so there isn't a 'right' answer. If you've got 12 minutes to spare, this is a good starter -

For years we've run Pirelli Scorps on our various RR's which have been fine. But 18 months ago switched to Michelin cross climates - in my experience slightly better in the wet and snow but slightly more noise (and about the same price).

Your milage may vary obviously

I’m lucky if I do 2,000 miles in it a year at the moment so seems extravagant to have two sets of wheels and tyres for this.

I’ve just put on some new wheels that are shod with Scorpion Verde all seasons. So far so good, but winter needs to come for a proper test. The original Scorpion Zeros were good too.
