Folks, just a reminder for those of us with diesels. Try to minimise the really short journeys.

The vast majority of us should of course be staying home and only going out for essentials. This may mean that your Range Rover is only used for very short journeys to the local supermarket. Depending how long this lock down lasts, it may mean that our dpf’s are not getting hot, and are not getting chance to enter self clean mode. As such they may soon start to clog. First you get the yellow warning message which means go for a long run (ideally motorway) to clean out the dpf. But of course we are not permitted to do that. I doubt the police would consider it essential travel! Soon after the amber warning if no action is taken it will change red which means it will go into limp home mode until an LR dealer can force a burn cycle and of course they are all closed. The gist being, folks may end up being without a car at all.

No idea if LR assist are still operating who can also trigger the cleaning cycle.
No idea if tools like the ID Gap tool can trigger it.

(Please note nothing in this message is encouraging folk to go against government advice)

Can someone post up the conditions required for standard self clean. letters not necessarily in the right order

No perfect definition as it requires certain temperatures to be achieved - 30mins + on a motorway for example

I don't think there's a leave it running at tick over on the drive option.

I've always done short journeys - and yes had DPF issues.

No you can't do a forced regeneration with an IID but the main thing to do is monitor your soot level.

Actually due to the EGR the short cold engine journeys don't seem to fill it as much as hot running in slow traffic, say driving around London all day.

2011 Vogue SE 4.4 with lots of toys in Stornaway

i dont do many miles and most of my journeys are a 8 mile round trip to the local supermarket and i've had only 2 yellow dpf warnings in the 3 years of 4.4 ownership...

both times were sorted by a steady 50 mph run for around 15-20 minutes.. ... - .- -.

i do (sorry, used to ) the school run, about 2 miles most days(no real traffic jams), odd shopping errands and to the stables close by. If in a period of between working then I rarely do any long runs, I will get the amber warning about once a month. As Stan says a 20 minute motorway run and I’m good to go.

So.....I’m classed as a key worker......and might need my car to get to work....if I don’t give it a run, I will have DPF issues and then can’t use car to get to work....

Working ok from home currently.

All depends if plod accept that you need to keep your car going so it’s available in an emergency.

Mines been stood for 2 weeks....

If your car has just been stood then it doesnt affect the dpf. It will be fine. Dpfs only really clog when engines never get proper chance to warm up so are initially running a rich fuel mixture and EGR’s are closed (as they are cold) thus there is a higher percentage of particulates. It can also happen a lot if sat in traffic engine idling a lot due to the EGR being closed on idle. When engines are able to run at higher speed (motorways for example) every so many miles (actually it’s measures on pressure differential) the engine ecu will trigger a dpf regen. This alters the fuelling to run at higher temps so burning off ash that accumulates in the dpf. This is done automatically - you won’t even notice it.

If you get an amber warning, i can drive to the motorway 3 or 4 mins away and if i join the motorway Northbound, its 1.5 mile to the next jn and its normally re-gen'd by the time i get to the junction! All done at 50-60mph...
