Gotcha's for Steering Wheel Replacemtn?

Question Hi all,

As part of a run of interior upgrades to my MY06 FF I have recently ordered a new steering wheel as the leather on my original one is looking worn and shiny. I'm wondering if it's something I should attempt to replace myself once it arrives rather than going to a garage - just wondered if anyone else has done this and if there are any particular "gotchas" I should look out for?

My main concern is entering any radio code after disconnecting the battery (I don't seem to have a code in the vehicle docs anywhere...is there even a code on the touch screen vehicles??). I'm also a little concerned about how easy it is to disconnect the airbag using the small release holes and how tricky refitting the heated steering wheel wiring loom is. Also does the main nut need to be tightened to a specific torque??

Other than that lot I'm sure it's simple!!!!

Anyone have any advice or experience of doing this??

Thanks very much,

- GL

Thats the one i used thanks scary....all i will say is when you are using something long and thin to disconect the airbag keep it dead straight and push hard as once you get one side uncliped the other side can be a lot harder to do "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

before you attempt to remove the airbag, make sure you disconnect the car battery and leave it for 10-20 minutes for the SRS capacitors to drain. Removing the airbag and wheel is a 10 minute job, very easy to do.

Thanks folks - I saw that you tube video from Powerful UK and it does look straightforward, however their printed instructions are covered in disclaimers (I guess for legal/anti numpty reasons) so thought I'd double check. Also the video is for the non heated steering wheel - mines the heated type - and I wondered if it glossed over how tricky it is to get the wiring loom associated with that back in place. Finally they refer to a radio code, and I'm not convinced I have one for my car - don't want to attempt this and Censored up my satnav etc in the process!

Can anyone offer any nerve reducing words on these points?

Thanks again,

GL

Just to close this one off....new steering wheel core turned up today and, following the instructions religiously, had no problems fitting it. One of the connectors was a pain to disconnect but other than that a trouble free DIY job and an excellent upgrade, the new steering wheel in soft napa leather with chromey spoke bits looks brill! Just the grill and side vents to do and hopefully my recent run of upgrades will be complete - over £3K spent so far and I need to stop!

Thanks all for your help and guidance as ever....
