Extended Warranty and Annual Servicing Quandary?

I wonder if anyone can help me with this, would love to know your thoughts.......

My 2016/66 L405 Autobiography was last serviced in late November 2018 at 18k miles. It has been getting less and less use recently, mainly because we're in our old L322 a lot with the dogs, so the L405 has only covered 9k miles since last service over 15 months ago.

I've just had a letter saying that my Extended Warranty is due for renewal in a few months time. T&C's of the warranty state as follows:

Servicing Requirements
It is a condition of this Warranty that your vehicle is serviced in accordance with
the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Throughout the warranty period a franchised Land Rover retailer or a VAT
registered garage should carry out all servicing and repair work.
Services must be carried out within 1,000 miles/one month of the intervals
specified by the vehicle manufacturer, whichever comes first.

Now, while I understand I'm obviously approx 3 months over here, despite only covering 9k miles between services, considerably less than the 16k miles permitted between services. My question is this:

Looking closely at the warranty wording above, would you agree that if I have the car serviced prior to beginning the new period of extended warranty, I will be complying as the car will have been appropriately serviced throughout the duration of the new warranty period to which these terms apply?

Please let me know your thoughts?

Many thanks

I would telephone and speak to the warranty provider. They might ask for the vehicle to undergo a health check (of course they might just say crack on as you’re planning to do).

Note - if you take the car for a service at a main dealer, a health check forms a routine part of their service programme anyway.

I wouldn’t leave any of it to my own “man maths” around (or interpretation of) the Warranty wording.

We bought our L405 from a main dealer. It had one previous owner from new. He didn’t have it serviced at main dealers, he had it serviced by a local independent specialist he trusted (he traded it in at the main dealer for a brand new RR and nobody at the dealership had a clue what it’s service history was). They hadn’t checked the car’s history before taking it and putting it on their forecourt (their system was electronic and the independent’s records were all on paper). I found all that out as part of my due diligence before buying it from the main dealer.

In the end, I wasn’t concerned as the service history with the independent was excellent.

Importantly, it had no effect at all on the 2 Year LR Approved Used Warranty or on the LR Extended Warranty that now covers the car (we’ve made substantial claims on both of those warranty products, although do religiously/ on time have the car serviced at the same main dealer).

I’d ask the warranty provider (then get it in writing) 👍

Thank you for taking the time to reply PLD118.

I think having the car serviced outside the dealer network is fine, it's just the timing being a little late that concerns me slightly. However, having looked more closely at the wording, I'm pretty sure it should be OK.

The T&C's wording states:

It is a condition of this Warranty that your vehicle "IS" serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. Before going on to make reference to how the car should be maintained "throughout the warranty period".

The word "IS" relates to something either present, or future. It doesn't relate to past tense, otherwise it should say, "must have always been", which it doesn't. So I doubt they could successfully argue it if the car is main dealer serviced just ahead of Warranty commencement date.

Many thanks

Are you actually over the service interval? Are you applying 12 months or going by the cars indication?

I think the manufacturer’s guidelines are 12 months, mileage or car indicator - whichever comes first.....

Some manufacturers have now built the date element into their software to trigger the indicator , but I don't think JLR have done that yet - my mileage means I don't get past 12 months to find out

Ok. My service maintenance book doesn't say that. It clearly states: Refer to your Service Interval Indicator.

Now I have an L322 and not an L405 like the OP, but I'd be surprised if they changed that. So debates around whether that is best for the vehicle or not, from a warranty company perspective I would argue that if you have a documented record that the last service took place, AND you haven't had the service interval indicator come in since then, THEN you haven't gone over the servicing requirements and can wholeheartedly and honestly say that it is serviced within the manufacturers guidelines.

The L405 servicing is all recorded online - there is no book to stamp any more.

I've been using an Indy for a while now, but I just checked mine online & this is on there -

seems clear that 16k miles or 12 months is the schedule.....

LAST SERVICE RECORDED

I think you are conflating different issues. This is really simple;

1. What does the vehicle say?
2. Have you got the paperwork to back it up?

1 is as per what the servicing manual states (at least it does for mine) and that is what is relevant for Warranty/Insurance.
2 is to evidence that it actually happened instead of just someone resetting the indicator Wink

What you listed has no bearing on the manufacturer's guidelines or recommendations; that is just a record (or should I say missing records Shocked ) for your vehicle.

Take a look at your Service Portfolio; section maintenance;

But as I said, I could have this wrong. Perhaps the L405 has switched to fixed term servicing.

You are correct - whilst on the Eurotunnel earlier, I looked at my manual - it explicitly states that the car dictates the need for a service & the intervals are only a guide.

The extended warranty booklet goes further and gives you 1000 miles after the indicator comes on to get the service.

Better to have the debate about whether cover applies before you pay the premium than when you want to claim. Being an insurance contract it is subject to a requirement of "ultimate good faith" on the part of the policyholder, i.e. you need to tell the insurer anything that might be relevant to risk, and if you don't and they find out about the service history (not difficult, they presumably ask for evidence as part of the claim back-up) they may well refuse to pay. Having to go to arbitration/court at that stage to try to make them pay is unlikely to be good value. Being a renewal it's not the same as a warranty on an AU car that you have just bought, as the service history clock starts afresh when you buy.

I'd write to them telling them the story before renewal and get written confirmation they are happy before proceeding. Only Range Rovers since 1988
