Just Bought My 5th FFRR

Hi All,

Over the decades I have owned 2 x Series 2 RRs, 1 x P38, 1 x 3.6 TDV8 Vogue and have now picked up my 5th FFRR, a 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE last week, as a replacement for my 2010 3.6 TDV8 Vogue, that I have passed on to my son as his first FFRR.

During the first week travelled to Europe covering 1,800 miles.

At 86k miles just a few minor niggles due to poor maintenance by previous owner and failure of the dealer to prep the vehicle properly, all sorted now Smile

Will post some real world pictures of the car in due course.

That looks nice. Same as mine bar the wheels and design pack.

You’ve obviously owned enough of them to appreciate how good they are when the niggles are sorted.

My Niggles

Hi DrRob,

First of all thank you all for the kind comments... having driven the 2010 3.6 TDV8 Vogue for the past two years, the 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE is more economical and has considerably more power.

I am a British expat living in sunny Bucharest, Romania (business) and travel to the UK from Romania around 4 times a year.

Hoping for a warm Saturday this weekend - will then give the car a full polish and post some real world pictures when finished.

Engine and engine bay all clean and full service history. Engine and Gearbox running perfectly.

The niggles were truly minor:

1. Front number plate cracked and rear number plate with rusty screws - both plate replaced.
2. Driver's door not opening from the outside due to a bodge, became evident after a few days of ownership - sorted.
3. Filthy upper tailgate channels, cobwebs in interior of lower tailgate - cleaned.
4. Seats, door panels, visors, roof lining covered in dirt from previous owner - cleaned.
5. Serviced by dealer prior to sale with new MOT - but oil level low by one litre - topped up.
6. Front tracking out. - sorted.
7. Wheel nuts swollen and rusty locking nuts - ordered new steel nuts and new locking nuts.
8. Paintwork covered in swirls - will be polishing myself ASAP.

Will be replacing the Vredestein tyres with Pirelli all weather 255R55/20s in the next couple of weeks as I don't like the idea of not knowing the history of the tyres (puncture repairs etc) while driving full tilt on the German Autobahns.

Will be giving the car a full oil and filter service before my next trip to the UK for Easter.

Car gets a full wash and interior valet every weekend at the local car wash.

Have new side steps and mud flaps front and rear yet to install. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Current

This 4.4 litre Vogue is simply amazing in regard to fuel economy and comfort.

I have never had a major issue with any of the Range Rovers I have owned over the years which is probably due to my OCD with regard to maintenance. They are always used daily and often driven on long trips spanning 1,000 plus miles often on German Autobahns at high speed. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Current

I have seen your thread, which actually prompted me to go out and buy a vacuum pump last week Smile Otherwise the oil would have been drained as previously through the sump plug Smile

Its best to do these oil and filter changes yourself - at least you have the peace of mind that the correct oil is used and that the filters are actually changed.... 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Current

Update on Progress

Good Morning All,

Currently in the office, with all staff working from home - peaceful!!!

Now had the car three weeks being used as a daily drive to and from the office totalling around 6 miles round trip in the city (Bucharest) with no issues arising. Have now covered in excess of 2,200 miles in the car without a hitch in the three weeks of ownership.

No oil leaks
No exhaust smoke
No engine / gearbox anomalies
No drive train / brake issues

As all of the wheel nuts had swollen and the locking nuts were totally rusted I have replaced all of the wheel nuts with stainless steel nuts and the locking nuts on Saturday. Needed to hammer an impact socket onto each wheel nut and use a three foot breaker bar to release them. Torqued the new nuts up to 140 Nm and the locking nuts to 120 Nm.

New upper tailgate struts as these were totally covered in rust.

There are two of the fixings on the windscreen scuttle missing on the passenger side and I have also found that the windscreen washer tubing had been un-clipped above the battery. It would appear that someone had to access the battery through the scuttle due to a flat battery and didn't replace the scuttle trim clips and re-clip the tubing properly when finished. Again I suspect the dealer.

Wheel alignment completed on Friday due to wear on the outside edge of the front tyres.

Had a good poke around under the car and noted how clean it was underneath with no excessive rust. Will however get the car wax oiled before next winter.

Aircon was blowing warm. During the recharge the workshop loaded the aircon to 880 based on 4 zone climate, but it still blew warm. Was concerned that there were issues with the compressor etc, but when recharged a second time to 700 and now blows ice cold.

Fitted rubber cap to lower tailgate switch.

Checked production spec sheet and found that the design pack had been factory fitted from new.

Have not yet polished the car as I have ordered a DA polisher and new pads. I do have a rotary polisher, that I have used with great success over the years, but it is a heavy beast and I wanted something lighter.

New tyres being fitted today, 275/50 R20s 113 W as these will fill out the wheel arches a little more than the currently fitted 255/50R20's.

I had travelled from Folkestone, Kent to Accrington together with my son in my (now my son's) 2010 3.6 TDV8 and found that my speedo was reading around 3 mph less than his at 80 mph and the GPS speed on my car, when we went to pick the car up from the dealer.

I have gone for the Gripmax at just under £100 per corner. I fitted these tyres to my 2010 3.6 TDV8 in 22 inch 285/40R22 a year ago and found them to be excellent value for money, with no detrimental performance issues. So decided to have them fitted to this 2012 4.4 TDV8. At 68 years of age I don't drive like I stole it so didn't feel it was necessary to waste money on Pirelli's at double the price. Max speed I travel at is usually 90 mph on most motorways other than Germany, where I do max out at 110 mph.

The next jobs are:

1. Replace radiator top hose, that has been bodged by previous owner / dealer.

2. New discs and pads all round. In view of the likelihood of seized nuts and bolts etc I have ordered a range of additional quality tools that will ensure that I will be able to finish the job of replacing the discs and pads without fail, come what may.

3. Sort out the rust on the rear wheel arch lips. These are quite rusty with dry solid mud caked between the rear wheel arch lips and the rear wheel arch liners. I have already ordered the trim for the rear wheel arches as advised by members of this forum. After clearing out the debris, sanding back and treating the rust and respraying the lips I will pack the lip liners with grease before fitting them. That should solve any further issues with rust in that area.

4. I will also fit a new battery before next winter even if there continue to be no issues with the current battery.

5. There are a couple of cosmetic issues with the door cards on the passenger side doors. The driver side front seat also has a patch of leather on the right hand side bolster where the naked leather is showing. So have ordered a new airbrush set complete with compressor and the leather repair kit for the Ivory interior. Will sort these cosmetic issues out when the items ordered arrive. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Current
