Just got the v5 for the new toy, have found a potential buyer for the rubbish plate that it came with, the dvla website naturally gives basic guidance for transferring a plate. It’s not something I have experience of , However do any of you who have experience tell me exactly how it’s done, I naturally don’t want to be in a position where I’m easily scammed etc, it’s not a valuable plate by any means but it’ll pay for a tank of fuel

As the plate is still on the car, am I right in thinking the safest way would be to put the plate on retention, wait for the certificate, then nominate the buyer and give them the form after payment?

Or transfer onto their car after receipt of funds.

I’d put it on retention first. The online form for doing so will immediately email you the certificate. Then you can sell it and give them the certificate.

It happens nowadays instantly.

No you don’t have to wait. You get a certificate immediately stating the original vehicle registration mark if that is still available or assigned a new one.

You can use that to make the new plates.

LOL Yes I remember those days. First it was the one about 15 miles away that got closed. Then I had to go 85 miles to get it done. But the last car I had for a whopping 11 years (unique for me), so when I did it three weeks ago when getting my FFRR I was well impressed.

Just need to find me a really cheap dateless one now. I’m happy with a short NI 3x3, but everyone says they look cheap, well yes, that’s why they are cheap ffs.

In my opinion, when a plate doesn’t make sense there is no point. And the fewer characters the better. And no misspelling. Otherwise one may as well have the normal plate on it. Regardless of how cheap it is.
