Gap tool

I was trying to check for updates for my iid bt. My pc and the update tool cannot see it when I plug it in. Does it need to be plugged in to the car too?

Yep done that and iPad is the only apple device I have. Anyone around Northamptonshire with Knowledge of these? 2011 4.4tdv8 Vogue
