SOLVED Noise comes right rear wheel when blower motor starts

When I switch on the blower I hear - 30 seconds later or so a clac---clac--- clac noise.

But this noise is not coming from the dashboard as I assumed in the beginning but from the rear right wheel area. I was looking/hearing into the engine bay: nothing.

But when I looked into the right rear wheel well there it was very clear.

I then opened the trunk and the right little compartment (with the trailer hitch and the wheelbrace and electronic).
But is surprisingly I couldn't locate the noise from there. It was louder to hear from outside then inside.

Is there an electronic component in the rear area?

What does “FBH“ mean?

and I should also and:
When I Switch off the heater blower knob. — and then switch it on again— then the noise usually disappears

FBH = fuel fired booster heater. It's well described in the workshop manual for your 2011 FF. That's in the Wiki here

Look under climate/auxilliary heating/fuel fired boosteer heater/

The noise you hear is likely the pump for it, which cycles at about 1 per second, then increase to about 2 per second if required.

There's lots of threads on here about it, but a read of the WM will help to understand the piece of kit. It does seem to rely on battery voltage being sufficient and shuts down if that is too low. Also do you have a remote fob with the ON/OFF buttons? Cheers

I will read the manual today

But I was surprised to hear the constant clack——clack—-clack-noise in the REAR wheel well and I thought to find all FBH-related components in the right FRONT wheel well (under the battery)

The FBH itself is in the front under the battery, but the little pump that supplies the fuel to it is under the car near the tank at the rear. Thus you'll hear the clack clack at the rear.

By the way a question of understanding how heating is working:

I thought the heating energy from the auxilliary-heater is only needed as long the engine (water) temperature is too cold to spend enough thermal energy.

And as soon as the engine (water) temperature reaches 90 degrees is there not enough thermal energy to heat the interior/cabin so that the auxilliary heater and FBH-pump could stop working (= no FBH-noise ) ??

The clicking of the FBH pump is normal.

If it’s doing the click noise it is working as it should. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As NMJ says, it certainly sounds as if it's working correctly, so why would you think of changing it?

You are correct in saying the FBH should stop working but at the water temperature of about 75C (from the WM) and if you shut of the blower the FBH also stops.

from the WM

Additional Heating
Additional heating reduces the heater warm-up time and is also used to maintain heater performance throughout the drive
cycle.
The ATC module activates the additional heating mode when the engine is running and the following conditions coexist:
The ambient temperature is less than 1 °C (34 °F) on petrol vehicles or 8 °C (41 °F) on diesel vehicles.
The engine coolant temperature is less than 75 °C (167 °F).
The heater coolant temperature is less than 70 °C (158 °F).
The heat demand is more then 75%.
The blower is on.


To activate the additional heating mode, the ATC module energizes the auxiliary coolant pump and sends a K bus message to
the FFBH unit to start/continue operation (the changeover valve remains de-energized).


The ATC module stops the FFBH and de-energizes the auxiliary coolant pump when any of the following occur:
The engine stops.
The ambient temperature increases to more than 3 °C (37 °F) on petrol vehicles or 15 °C (59 °F) on diesel vehicles.
The engine coolant temperature increases to more than 75 °C (167 °F).
The heater coolant temperature increases to more than 70 °C (158 °F).
The heat demand decreases to less than 70%.
The blower is selected off.

I still read the WM on tihs and seem to find more information each time. Perhaps I am just slow in picking up the details Smile Cheers

I drove the RR for more than 20 miles today and found out that the noise indeed disappeared when engine was really warm
Since I drove only 8-12 miles per trip in the last months I was not aware of that.

So I am happy as it seems I don‘t have to do (and to pay) anything.
And I learned more about the car (and how it works).
Thanks for the manual anyway.

And you know what:
When I opened ebay this morning they made some „suggestions“, the first was a Webasto FBH pump...how did they know..
