Hi all,

Been doing a lot of reading about these as I'm about to pull the trigger on purchasing a 2007 TDV8. I know the infotainment system on these is a) integrated into the car quite heavily b) uses the MOST fibre bus and c) is a pain to mess with. However, would the following work:

Get one of these to provide an Aux input (not sure if this year has Aux in by default or not?): https://www.lrparts.net/vplme0004-range-ro...-2009.html

Remove the CD changer unit from the glovebox and stick the stock head unit in there instead so I don't lose access to its functions completely (is there space in the 2007 onwards glove box to fit the head unit in?)

Put an android head unit in, connected to the Aux in for audio.

Thanks Stan. Most of those threads seem to be leaving the stock head unit where it is and using the cable to provide additional functionality via a phone. I want to remove / relocate the stock head unit completely..... so my quesitons are more around whether the stock head unit can be relocated into the glove box? I've seen it done on a <=2006MY but I think there's more glove box space in those.

cant remember anyone doing it here...maybe the cables dont reach? and there would be a fair bit of fettling i should imagine...

I'm an unmitigated fettler so not a problem there, I'll give it a go

Nah, I've decided to 3d print a tablet mount that wraps around the factory head unit instead. Picked up a nexus 9 for £40, much cheaper than a decent android head unit.

It's still in the planning stages, I'm now working on a raspberry pi based system running 'crankshaft-ng', which allows you to run Android auto on it. Just need to work out where to get power etc from.

It seems it took a while, but since you now know what and how to do it - how long will it take you to make another 1 or 2 or so and most important how much will it cost?

It took a while more because life got in the way than actually being difficult to do

I used a BMW E39 adaptor bracket (the plastic surround) because I already had a generic double din head unit and didn't fancy forking out for another one.

However, I've seen on aliexpress you can get a head unit that a) fits an E39 and importantly b) is shallow depth. So it *should* fit straight in. (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000320846082.html)

The general process is:

Remove old head unit (this is the bit that takes time, you have to remove the lower glovebox, so you can get at the screws holding the upper glovebox, so you can get at the bolts that hold the passenger airbag to the upper dashboard, so you can remove the upper dashboard....)

The wiring loom for the stock head unit also has one cable that goes to the speaker on the upper dashboard, so you need to split that cable loom as far up as you can, to give you enough slack to....

push the cables through into the space where the lower glovebox goes. At this point I also cut a hole in the top right of the glovebox, to feed the cables through and give me more slack.

Tap into the stock head unit connector for your permanent 12v and ground. I couldn't find a switched 12v on that connector (there's one that comes on briefly when the car powers up, then goes off again after 5 seconds) but handily, there's the interior fusebox right there, and plenty of those fuses are switched.

Put your new head unit in place.

Put it all back together (note: the lower glovebox is a right pig to get back on. the top lines up fine, then you go to put the 2 screws in the inside and they look way out. Persevere at this point, they will go in with a bit of wiggling about and brute force)

Plug the stock head unit back in its new home.

There's 3 coloured wires that look like aerials on the back of the stock unit, I could only get one of them to reach. I suspect the other 2 have something to do with either the navigation, the venture cam or the rear camera..... but I don't use any of those so I'm not arsed. I suspect if you do a bit more investigation you can probably get enough slack on those other 2 cables to get them in there, but I didn't have the time / inclination to do so.

Incidently, if anyone has access to a pinout / wiring schematic for the denso touchscreen I would be immeasurably grateful. I could do with picking up a reverse signal from somewhere so I can wire my reverse camera into the new head unit
