United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue TDV6 Fuji White
Timing Belt and Crankshaft

Recently picked up my FF TDV6. It’s a September 2014 model, am I right in believing that means it will have the newer timing chain fitted? Only done 31k on the clock, car is maintained/ serviced well.

Also I have booked an appointment with local halfords for a free cambelt check-up and for peace of mind. I was wondering if I should be worried as i have read several posts on here and majority of the TDV6 owners had no issues.

Really appreciate your output. Thanks Current

United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Santorini Black

Hi there, welcome and congratulations on your purchase!

I'm looking at a 405 when the trusty L322 needs replacement so interested to hear what you think.

Cambelts wise there are 2 fitted on the V6 and I believe the interval is 7 years or 112,000 miles whichever is reached first. If I remember rightly there are a couple of idler bearings that are recommended to be changed at the same time.

Just a word of advice in my opinion I would steer well clear of Halfords or similar with a Range Rover. Far better to identify an Independent Land Rover / Range Rover garage in your locality. I would also avoid the main dealers unless you have a Land Rover warranty.

Above all enjoy the car and all the best! Current

Also, please see the below thread regarding your belt query.

If yours has only done 31k miles, maybe not time yet but check whether its miles and/ or years for the change criteria and if in doubt, best changed by an L405 TDv6 specialist (if that's what LR schedules would expect):
https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic47376.html?highlight=belt

For engine related matters, wouldn't be going near anyone other than an LR L405 TDv6 specialist (therefore, probably not the firm you mention).

You might read on this forum, third party tales similar to, "I've been told about an L405 TDv6 crankshaft that imploded". You might find plenty crankshaft failure stories about the old shape RRS and/ or old shape Discovery 'TDv6' (but to date and remembering the L405 has been on sale since 2012, you will find very few about the L405, either on this forum or the wider internet).

There is little to no credible evidence on this forum to give any reasonable cause for undue concern about the L405 3.0 TDv6 crankshaft having an inherent design fault resulting in repeat failures... or being a weak link in the engine line up (been pursuing and documenting the debate for a few years now including contacting main dealers and asking if they've experienced any or many failures with the L405).

What we've learned from credible LR qualified and experienced forum members (one at least) is that no expense spared, diligent maintenance and compliance with LR technical requirements should maximise the chances of your TDv6 remaining a brilliant and durable engine (and if something does go wrong if you follow that advice, should increase your chances of an LR goodwill contribution).

Mechanical things don't always last as long as we'd like or expect. Things do break down sometimes. However, that applies equally to the 3.0, the 4.4, the 5.0 and to every other vehicle on and off road Thumbs Up
