Another newbie!

Hello all. Posted a similar one in the intro forum, but it might be better placed here. Just picked up my 2005 Vogue yesterday. It's done just a shade over 50k and has two previous owners. The car has been regularly serviced, with the last service completed last November. Just wanted to get thoughts on whether it's advisable to get a gearbox oil and filter change done any time soon?

Nice low mileage. How about some pics?

Yep, do the oils and fluids unless it's been documented recently and you're certain of it. I think all the transmission oils are worth changing as well.

Depends how long you plan to keep it for Whistle

As above, I'd get all the fluids changed - it's not that much money and gives you piece of mind that you've done what you can to prolong the life of some expensive parts.

New year, new Range Rover - that's th way to beat the Winter blues. Nice car and a desirable version with the N/A Jag engine and updated electronics. Not at all easy to find in good low-miles condition now, are they?

My 2003 had 80,000 on it when I bought it and the gearbox exploded at 86,000... a truly rubbish life-span in terms of mileage that cost £2600 to put right with a reconditioned unit, torque converter and oil cooler. So yes, service it now and you'll have a fighting chance of getting past 100k without major expense. At some point when convenient, check the transmission cooler and the radiator for full function - they get blocked over time, lose efficiency and the 'box overheats which will kill it in short order. These parts are obviously significantly cheaper and easier to replace as a preventative measure if there's any doubt.

Thanks for the advice Drake. I'm only going to do about 2k miles annually, but you're right about preventative measures to stave off any potential pitfalls - I.e. radiator etc. Will look to get the gearbox oil and filter changed first, then get diff oils changed thereafter.

I see - 2000 miles p/a will definitely keep the car pretty young at heart then, plus moderate the fuel bills!

Thanks six. It's got quite a lot of swirling, but I'll get my DA polisher out and give it a mop and polish when the weather warms up a bit.

Well I've been looking into the issue of getting the gearbox oil changed. Dartford transmissions will do the flush AND change the filter for £275, which doesn't seem bad at all. They said that the filter must be changed. Another place in Kettering jgs4x4, will do gearbox flush, change the diff oils for £380, but no filter change on the gearbox. They said the filter is a gauze and the flush will clean it out. I think I might just go to Dartford transmissions and get them to do the flush and get the diff oils replaced in the Spring
