Purchase price

Hi Guy's.

Looking at a lot of for sale adverts on different web sites lately, with view to purchase.
Quite a few of the cars i look at state original purchase price of £ xyz.zz
I know you can get the built sheet from TOPix via vin number.

So he lies my question: Where do they get the original purchase price from?

Thanks in advance.

Would you not have to track down the original owner (it would be on a sales invoice) or try to locate and get the original selling dealer to agree to sharing that information with you (perhaps via a redacted version of the original invoice)?

Other than for your curiosity, of more interest might just be the build sheet/ what options the car had when new... So you can compare it with similar vehicles on the market before you buy and for future resale considerations (as 2 examples).

Thumbs Up

As already mentioned, the only way to get to find out the original purchase price would be from the original owner direct. Due to the ever changing data protection laws I can't see a dealer parting with any financial information. Even trying to work it out from base cost plus extras would only be a best guess as the supplying dealer may well have sold at a different price due to stock, time of year and special events.

Personally I think the best option is to look for a car that meets the spec you are looking for in the condition that is acceptable and at a price you feel is right.

I would cynically suggest that it is just an educated guess by the seller to try and show how much of a "bargain" their car is.

I think that British Car Auctions & Autotrader, for the trade only, can provide an accurate list price for a car including extras when new...
