Driving on the continent in 3 weeks time.....

Just though I’d post up re brexit and continental driving.

According to the government website we still aren’t 100% sure if after 31 Jan we will need an international driving permit to drive in Europe.

In theory we will. But getting one is now simples.

Be aware that different countries may require a different IDP eg Andorra needs a different one to France, aparently..... so I will have to get 2, and at £5.50 each over the counter in the post office that is fine.

For the first time in a long time we will also need Green cards when crossing the channel!

FFS. all this so we can “take back control” what a load of boll Censored ks There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I suppose I’d better take my head out of the sand and sort some IDP’s out.

I’m slightly confused though, because my driving licence is an EU one, albeit issued by the UK, with an expiry date on it - so those become invalid automatically on Jan 31 ?

Also Andorrà isn’t in the EU - so not sure what the score is there - I guess they accept an EU licence as valid - I’ve never really thought about it.

I’m assuming that unless they sort it out as part of the Leaving deal our licenses will cease to be EU licenses on 31st as with our passports, as you say Andorra accept EU licenses but as they won’t be EU any more then in theory an IDP is needed.... In theory....

Over the counter service now at certain post offices (lots) used to be a lot less and you got them mail order through RAC or AA.

It’s all a bit inconvenient, but they last a year and are cheap, so not a big loss in all. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I did a quick search and my head hurts, all seems to conflict and lots of ‘maybe’ - and only if we leave without a deal - but Boris has a very good deal - so nothing to worry about then Rolling with laughter

Looks like Andorrà needs IDP 1949 - which is the same as Spain - but Spain states that you won’t need one until 9 months after leaving and only if you plan to stay >6 months - so I’d expect Andorrà to follow that.

France needs IDP 1968 and that’s valid for 3 years - and given the French are more likely to be hot on it, I guess it’s worth a £5.50 outlay........

Our dogs are in Andorrà - coming back around Easter time, so I guess we will find out.

They are never checked outbound, only at the terminal on the way back anyway, so I guess it’s up to the UK authorities what is acceptable- and I can’t see why the passport should not be enough - but I guess you never know Big Cry

Interested to see how it goes the other way as I have a French driving licence. Confused I have UK entitlement but you can't hold two licences at the same time. John

I’ve been to get my IDPs that are required for Andorra and France, and I’ve come away a whole £11 lighter.

Diligently waited while the post office clerk filled them in by hand, stamped them, Prit Sticked the photos on, and handed them over. That’s 25 mins of my life I’ll never get back.

There’s no computerisation at all. No database of who has one, no imputing data into the system. It’s all biro on card.....

WALOC we have inflicted on ourselves as a nation..... I need one of these because we decided to “take back control” Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter bollo Censored cks. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Word of caution if you intend to drive a transit make sure the relevant section is marked on the IDP
I had to go back there is some confusion about which groups of vehicles you are allowed to drive dependent on when you passed your test in the UK

Depends on the IDP and the categories on your license. My license is populated with everything except Bikes, coaches and HGVs.

The French one is stamped to match the license, but the Andorran one misses out several categories which are on the UK license, for example there is no +E catorgory, there is an E category but that’s not trailers aparently.... which is irrelevant as it only lasts 12months and I’m not planning on towing a trailer into Andorra this year...😀

As far as I can tell she stamped everything she was allowed to! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I’m sorry but I’m a bit confused..... Thud

I believe there is no need for IDP’s travelling in France ( The entire EU as well ) as there will be a transition period after the end of January this year up to December this Year.

Can someone who “knows” please confirm. Ive just got this information off the RAC website today Banging Head

It does seem that no one really knows - and I guess that will be mirrored inEurope also - so you could get a road side stop, or an accident and find that you’ve not got the right documents.

I really need to get down to the post office I suppose Yawn

Ok, thanks guys.

So its off down to the Post Office. Best get just in case as the french police could play silly Censored even more so with this uncertainty as soon as they see a GB registered vehicle.

I just hope these form applications and payments are replicated for non British drivers entering the uk also Whistle
