I’d be interested to hear of people’s experiences of running either of the examples in the title.

I’ve got 275x40x22 Contis on 7 spoke alloys and largely due to the hushed nature of the engine they do transfer some road noise into the cabin. I can’t fault them on smooth tarmac and road holding is exceptional for a big 4x4. But quiet comfort has always been a higher priority for me than sporty characteristics.

Would I be wasting my money buying a nice set of 21’ wheels to get a higher profile tyre. Or do the larger 285 size tyre, which would provide a marginally higher profile make a difference.

Opinions gratefully received.

P.S Would anybody be interested in a set of 22’ 7 spokes on Contis with approximately 6mm of even tread? I don’t seem to see any for sale when I look at 22’ wheels on eBay. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing

If you’re seeking ride comfort and lack of noise, fit some 20’s.

As a bonus, you’ll get near immunity to kerbs and potholes and the car’s tendency to tramline disappears I only moved from 21’s (rather than 22’s) as an experiment and there is no I would ever go back; the difference is night and day! With these wheels it’s even simplicity itself to check the brake pads without removing the wheels.

A set of 4 x brand new OEM take off wheels and tyres, with Michelin or Pirelli tyres can be picked up for less than £600 as well

I’ve been looking at 20’ inch wheels and have seen some nice ones only to investigate and find they’re for Evoques and Discovery Sports, I’m assuming they would be below the required load rating.

Going forward, would 20’ wheels that fit RR Sport, D4 and D5 be OK and would either 50 or 55 profile do the job?

I had 5011 style on my D4 which I loved but not so sure they suit a FF.

Evoque, Velar & DS wheels WONT fit a RR sir as they have a different stud pattern or (PCD)...

If you want to keep with the 22’s then Continental made a “silent” type of tyre due to complaints of your nature sir... 👍 check the search function or google

Now just need to convince SWMBO that the first thing we need to do after spending a wad of cash on a new RR, is replace the wheels

If you’re not bothered about keeping the 22’s, you should get usefully more for used 22’s than the new 20’s will cost you 👍

FWIW - I wouldn’t sell the 22’s, my dealer said they would reduce any trade in value by £2k if I replaced the 22’s with 20’s. I would keep them to remount later.

I run both 22’s in the summer and 20’s in the winter shooting season with AT’s.

Personally I think the 20’s look awful, and appear undersized for such a large vehicle. Part of the looks can be retrieved by having aggressive AT tyres mounted.

As far as the ride is concerned I haven’t noticed much difference to be honest from the 22’s which are fitted with 275/40/22 and I am running 285/50/20’s on the 20” rims not the narrower 255’s - in theory the 285’s should give a better ride as they are significantly larger. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

To me, 20’s make it look true to its purpose as a genuine off road car, while 22’s make it look like a HotWheels toy car



It’s just up to the invidual owner and their priorities and tastes.
