4.4 TDV8 oil leak

Hi all

I’ve got a 4.4 TDV8 which just deposited a whole load of oil along the road and in the drive! It’s not empty so hopefully not too much damage...

It’s hard to tell where it’s coming from, but is N/S. I’m assuming somewhere near the turbo.

So two questions.

1. Can the turbos be changed with engine in on the 4.4? Or perhaps a better question, what’s involved?

B. How the hell do you get it in neutral without starting the engine, for example to tow it? The manual says refer to service technicians manual!

TIA[/quote]

To select neutral remove the insert from the front cup holder unit and find a slotted head screw beneath, turn that and it should go into neutral. Note that RRs should not be towed any distance, they need to be carried on a truck or trailer, otherwise the transmission will be damaged. See more detail in handbook. Maybe also via search on here, I recall another thread not so long ago. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Perfect thanks.

When I say tow I meant to winch on to trailer and then onto 4 poster... Smile

Thanks!

Thanks. I got neutral no problem. It’s the turbo oil pipe I’m now trying to access...

Check where the oil is coming from. If I’m not mistaken the other end of the oil feed pipe comes from the back of the engine and if it is coming from the top end of the pipe then it is an easy pipe to access and is fixed with 2 new Orings have a search there is loads on here about the fix and how to do the Orings. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks,

It appears to be lower half to N/S turbo, possibly from the drain. It’s hard to tell.

Regardless, I don’t think the oil supply o ring can be “easy” to change, at least on the LHS turbo? I can’t even see the turbo end of it!

From where we’ve got so far, I’d say it needs driveshaft out, engine mount off. Subframe off and diff off to even entertain getting to turbo pipes?

If anyone has actually swapped a 4.4 turbo I’d be keen to know how far you stripped things back to do it!

As NMJ says Worth checking the top of that pipe, and also the oil cooler generally top of the 'Vee'.
Oil can definitely work its way down there.

If it is the turbo then your removal list is about right. Sad
You might be able to leave the sub frame. Cheers, Greg

When I say top end I mean at the back top of the engine and running down have a look here as a possible source which is a damn site easier to fix. https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic35977.html?highlight=o+ring There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks guys, had a quick look at the cooler end but don't see much oil there.

When the engine is running, the oil pours off the LHS turbo at the cold side. We've stuck a camera in there but it's hard to see. its wet around the drain and not much higher, but hard to see why the drain would leak so badly...

Having the same problem with mine, oil leak from area of n/s turbo, did you ever get to the bottom of the problem? The issue as you say is seeing where the oil is coming from, local garage wants to drop the engine and fit a new turbo but at £3k+ I’m not ready to fire the parts cannon...
