Hi all,

So recently became a proud owner of a 2011 RR Vogue with 75.000 miles on it.

Bought the car in the Netherlands and wanted it serviced before a 2.000 KM drive home to Sweden. Long story short I left it to a "specialist" to do a an oil change, diffs/transfer case and replace both xenon head lamps.

Upon picking up the car and leaving they gave me a litre of engine oil in case it was needed on the way back - nice guys.

However, I noticed (thanks to a recent thread on this forum) that the oil specification was for the 3.6 TDV8 and not my 4.4 TDV8.

Upon questioning them on this it turns out they have no idea what kind of oil they´ve put in the car

I had a quick chat to camtech craig who advised me not to drive it. Unfortunately i had to get back to Sweden so made the drive anyway.

Now my question;

1. How do I "clean" the engine and make sure all wrong oil is out so that I can fill it up with correct oil?

2. How wrong can it go by having incorrect differential/transfer case oils? I get a feeling these will not be the correct spec either

3. Can these just be drained and replaced or will this also require some kind of cleaning?

As always, all answers greatly appreciated! I also need to know the extent of extra work needed as I will demand a full refund from the "LR Specialist" as soon as possible.

Most here use the Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF-L 5W-30

It needs the L

You can get a flushing agent, some people use it before oil changes.
You put a can in, run the engine for a short bit then drop your oil.

I would do 2 changes dropping the oil from the bottom connector on the sump., don’t bother with changing the filter on the first change, just loosen it off to let the oil drain down. Then change the filter on the second swap. that should flush the old oil out well enough imho.

In terms of the diffs, I would be more worried about them being overfilled, as they require an amount of oil rather than filling to overflowing the hole.

There is a spec for the oils in the wiki, I would drain and refill front rear and transfer box with the specified quantities.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

No idea how it works in Holland, but if you have made a round trip of 4000 km after a documented and 'published' possible oil error then I doubt very much that the garage will in any way stump up for any subsequent rectification.

Even your odometer will inform the garage that you have driven such an enormous distance after being made aware of the possible error and another specialist has also told you not to drive it. cf, your post here.

I sincerely hope that you have nothing more than an early oil change to pay for.

The refund situation is a whole other topic but in essence they guaranteed me that they put the correct engine oil in the car after I took it back the next day. I would however bet my last dollar that this is incorrect - based on several factors. RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

But you then decided to drive it a return trip of 4000 km, thus you agreed with them!

Get the oils changed again, somewhere else, clearly the car has so far survived.

And will continue to do so.

As Alistair said.

It shouldn’t do it much harm to have that oil in for a couple of 1000k especially as it was presumably mostly running long distance with the engine warm.

Most engine wear occurs when the engine is cold. The newer spec oil is low SAPS which produces is supposed to reduce the amount of spot going through the DPF. In theory any potential damage would be to the DPF. but as presumably you were running hot then that damage would likely be kept to a minimum. If you have an diagnostic tool it may be possible to see if the DPf needs a regen cycle. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
