Strange behaviour since gearbox flush? Any ideas?

Hey guys

I had my gearbox flushed by JGS4x4 on Thursday. They said they reset the gearbox so I should take it easy whilst the box learns again. So been driving like I'm driving Miss Daisy, put a good 140miles on it over the weekend. In the main, it's changing gear lovely, can hardly tell it's changing. However, once on Friday it seemed to "bang" into gear a bit abrupt, it was the first time since the flush I put my foot down a little harder. It didn't sound like gear banging together, just a very abrupt change. But after that it was fine. I put it down to it learning (at this point I hadn't done many miles)

Yesterday, 120 mile round trip to Oxford and back, changing perfectly. (both times letting it warm up for a good 3-4mins before driving)

Just now, I drove it from cold and it didn't want to change gear from 1st or 2nd. This felt more than it just holding onto the gears. It went up to 2000 revs, I back off, just stayed at those revs. Eventually it changed, a bit abruptly. And not sure if it is me, but feels like from a standstill, with very little throttle, the revs are climbing more than normal, almost like a manual would if the clutch was slipping.

Once it warmed up it felt fine again (not sure on the slipping bit)

Any ideas? Is this the gearbox still learning? JGS say it would normally take just 10-12miles to learn and that the holding on to the gears is normal (although in fairness to them they've only heard a short description so far via email)

I've checked the codes on the GAP IID tool and all good, nothing relating to the transmission.

To confirm, 2012 TDV8 with 114k on the clock. Was running perfectly fine before the flush.

When cold, they hold in gear. It’s normal.
Bodsy didn’t reset my box. He said it’s not needed for a flush so I didn’t question it

Thanks both. It is hard to explain, this is/was more than just a simple holding on to the gears and changing a little later. I'm sure it didn't do it before but I do tend to let the car warm up for 3-5 mins at least before driving, this time I pretty much drove straight out, so perhaps a bit colder than normal. I'll see how it is tomorrow, give it the normal warm up and see if it does it.

As for talking with JGS, just via email right now and so far not very impressed. I'll hold back on a review for now, give them a chance to come good, but it is not boding well.

Been reading up online on various forums and resetting the box immediately after a fluid change seems to be a need that is debated. I’ve also seen ways explained to help the gearbox learn again

https://www.rangerovers.net/threads/auto-learn-cycle.248473/

So, I’ve done about 160 miles of mixed driving. It’s definitely getting better but even on the way home yesterday it did a funny change. It feels software related as changing with paddles is no problem.

So am I better off banking the learning it’s done and trying some of the learn techniques in that link? Or should I do another reset and start again, now the fluid has bedded in?

And if I’m doing a reset, assume I can do that with the GAP IID tool?

Right ok, so it’s continuously learning, not just in the first x amount of driving following the reset?

Don't reset the gearbox. I ruined the ZF6HP on my old Discovery 3 by doing that.

I had a gearbox flush about 2 months ago. Took about a month to settle. Now it is great. Be gentle and give it time.

According to our resident gearbox guru Phil Winter, resetting the gearbox is only required when the solenoids have been changed out for new ones, NOT for the fluid/filter change.

There is a re-learning sequence for these boxes, if you send me a pm with your email address I will send it to you.

Also, it is likely that your fluid level is too low. That is why it seemed fine in the beginning but once the fluid went all over, not so much. So better top it up with a warm box (not too warm), there is a procedure to it. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

That’s great thanks, sending pm with email address now.

As for fluid levels, apparently they use a Flushing machine that replaces the same amount it takes out? So level should be ok?

It is a couple of years since I had mine done and they did reset the software.
I was told to expect a few odd changes whilst it re learned my driving style.
From memory the only noticeable difference was that it held each gear longer before changing up, but after a couple of weeks it just seemed back to normal, and has been fine ever since.

Bodsy rechecked my fluid level post flush when machine was disconnected and pipe system put back together. Got the box up to temperature (iid confirmed that) then he took the filler plug out and topped up as required. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
