Black Friday Sim only deal from Virgin Media

Hi all, thought this might be useful....

I’ve been using prepaid Three data sims in the car for the past 9 months and have used 3 over that time so was pleased to see that Virgin Media are currently offering a 10g for £10 sim only.

Note of caution.....It’s not quite plug and play as although the MY18 infotainment recognises the sim, you have to switch to manual network selection, add Virgin as the operator and then add your virgin mobile username and password. Once that’s done, 4g works a treat.

Is that £10 per month ?

How much data do you use ?

In my iPad I use a 3 data sim 24Gb and lasts for 24 months for a one time payment - it usually lasts me well over a year.

They are on Amazon today for £32

Hi there,

Yep £10 a month for 10Gb a month, I was using about 7-8Gb per month with the prepaid 24Gb Three sims and when those are £42 or worse £60 direct from Three it gets expensive. That said, with the Amazon Black Friday price today of £32 they are great value for money if you don't use that much data in the car and you don't want a 12 month commitment.

I must admit I didn't pay too much attention when the sim was demo'd. Its a 3 sim card in mine. To replace it do I need a 3 account as per the discussion above?

I presume the sim, which has just expired, also controls the comms to the car for the InControl app? 17 MY Corris Grey 4.4 VAB

It depends what you want - you can go pre-pay or contract.

Which one really depends on how much data you use & what offers are available at the time.

So you can either look for one that had a decent amount of data that lasts for a while & make a one time payment (contract free), or sign up to monthly payments with an ongoing contract.

Sorry if this one has been asked and answered before, but the more I read on this topic, the more confused I get.

I’ve never bothered with a stand-alone SIM for my MY16 AB. I presumed that all it would get me would be in-car Wi-fi for any passengers that for whatever reason didn’t have data access on their devices (eg a Wi-fi only iPad). I’m signed up to all the incontrol apps and other functionality (including Tracker, remote heater) all of which work without a SIM being plugged in to the car.

I appreciate that MY’s after mine have funkier infotainment setups but I’m confused as to why I’d shell out for a data plan for the car and hence why this thread is here.

Is it essentially because more recent 405s are able to make better use of a data SIM?

It gets you map updates and live traffic updates but I'm not sure what else. I have to admit that what you get with / without the sim isn't that clear. I got a 24 month / £30 sim from 3 via Amazon. 17 MY Corris Grey 4.4 VAB
