Help please, another bad tdv8 engine

Hi folks,

Sorry to report that I'm at my wit's end after another 3.6 tdv8 engine has run into problems. This time in a 2008 L332 Vogue.

The main dealer I had it recovered to found (unspecified) big end damage with metal debris in the oil filters and essentially told me that the engine was scrap. They didn't comment on the turbos, but my guess is that they either caused the problem, or if it was an oil pump failure, they will have been starved of oil and will still need work.

So I'm looking at options, the main dealer quoted close on £20k to replace with a new unit, which I don't think I'll go for.

I've had dozens of garages refuse the work as it's too big a job for them, I've got one that's busy until next summer and I've got 3 quotes for taking the engine out, recondition it and put it back.

Has anyone been through the process that can share advice? Is a rebuild the right decision, or would a second hand engine from a scrapped car be better?

Can anyone have a recommended garage that I may not have contacted?

I'm up in Scotland but I am willing to travel if I can avoid garages that will bring even more grief. I was lucky enough my friend overheard me getting one quote, he'd seen that garage on watchdog being done by the police for selling stolen parts.

Finally, has anyone used/heard about nzengines, vehicle maintenance UK & europe or engine fitters . co . uk ? I've got prices from all three, but have little information to go on.

If there are issues with discussing garages directly in the public forum, please send me a private message.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

I feel for you Big Cry

Unfortunately, I can't recall any cost effective rebuilds / replacements

Bad news, sorry to hear this.

Is it really worth repairing this car? I could imagine it being in the £5-7k price range to repair. The price of 4.4 tdv8s seems to be falling. Might be better to change.

There is an article in this month's LRO magazine about someone that did it himself as the quotes he got were way too expensive.

Don't know how adventurous you are, but it might be worth a read. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Look in the for sale section. Someone in Scotland was selling an engine. Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Mikey of this forum posted this 5 months ago. He may still have the 130K engine

The car, engine and gearbox/transfer box all have 205k miles on them

Gearbox has had a new TC at approx 180k

Engjne is sold, and being fitted into another L322. BUT, the engine coming out of that car is fine, with 130k miles on

The 130k engine needs 2 turbos (actuator faults) and an EGR valve, but to save costs for the customer, they want the whole unit swapped over, complete

So the 130k, bare engine is fine Thumbs Up

If that all makes sense Laughing Previously a 2008MY Tonga Green Vogue SE 3.6 TDV8

Thanks for all the responses, unfortunately my dad, who got one of the quotes thought that he was helping and had the car collected today. Rolling Eyes

He's been down to the garage and was very impressed with the set up and will be calling in to check on progress. I'll update you all on how it goes and add any photos I get sent. Apparently they have close on 30 landies there and are used by fleet places and dealers for doing engine rebuilds.

Although not in business long, the place he picked was recommended by an independent 4x4 place that had good reviews but was too busy to take my truck on.

Watch this space.
