What’s this cable for?

Found this today when checking the battery.

One end is connected to the negative side and on the possible side is another cable which is the same colour. This is hanging in mid air like it’s been snapped off something.

Looking at the label, it’s been fitted after the car was manufactured but what does it do?

May be the cables for the transport mode, but what manufactured date is your car? Odd it seems after your year info. Cheers

Hi, that's the battery monitoring cable, I recently replaced mine as it looked corroded and got one of a well known auction site for about £17. One end goes to the negative one one to the positive on the battery, part of the cable then goes through the bulkhead. When you change the battery I think your supposed to tell the ecu that a new battery has been installed which I did with my Gap tool, if any ecu's shut down any systems due to low battery voltage then the battery management system has be be reprogrammed so the car knows all is ok.

So as I suspected, that’s meant to be one cable between poz and neg. I’ll solder it back together then. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Hi Andy, here's a link to the cable I bought which was a geniune Landrover part and was actually only £16 delivered. The picture will give you an idea of the connections.

Thanks for the link

So with a snapped cable then, has this caused any issues to my car?

On the negative end there is a sticker saying “reprogrammed 2011”. I have no idea what this means. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Hi, when the battery monotoring system detects low battery voltage it can turn off certain none essential items such as heated seats, cigarette lighters etc so you keep enough power in the battery to start the car. I have an issue regarding no power to my rear heated seats that I thought may have been rectified by replacing the cable in question. Unfortunately it didn't work so my issue is unrelated, also as far as I know the Battery cable also sends and monitors the alternator to allow the correct charging of the battery. My issue may actually be the alternator and I plan on investigating the heated seat issue in the near future.

Forgot to mention when I replaced my cable the sticker date was 2010 which tied in with the fact I have a 2010MY car, a snapped cable won't neccassarily mean it would have turned anything off Andy, if everything was working fine before the cable snapped then there shouldn't be a problem as the system wouldn't know you had low battery voltage. It may be that your cable has previously been replaced, for £16 it's worth putting a new one on in my opinion.

I’ve just connected it back together and carried out a battery replacement in the IID tool as I’d disconnected the battery yesterday.
Let’s see what happens. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded
