Hi. Haven't posted in a while. Lately I've been getting a shudder in the drive train at or about 40kph. Much worse under load..I.e towing a caravan is diabolical with this issue. I can alleviate the shuddering if I back off the power as I accelerate through this speed range. I originally thought it was the front prop shaft developing an out of balance issue at a certain rpm. I had been under the car and found the shaft to have a lot slackness and lateral play. Changed it out with a good s/h unit but the shuddering is still present, but less intense, so I can accelerate harder with less shudder. My thought now is I've probably fixed a side issue rather than the root cause. I've read it could be a LUC wear plate in the torque converter.. Could a broken engine mount give the same or similar effect ? Once you've driven a Range Rover, everything else seems 2nd rate.. Eeeek I'm trapped for life.

If you think its the lock-up clutch ( feels like driving over cattle grid ) The cheapest test would be to add https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3RmaLuhMjA to see if it changes anything.

Probably not the case with your situation but a sticking caliper can cause a shudder like going over a cattle grid. Easy to check and eliminate. After a short run check the wheels to see if one is hotter than the others. John

I hope you changed the filter. I have used Nulon Multi Vehicle Full Synthetic fluid and BMW x5 3.d filter in my td6. Never had any issue. There was a thread about 2 months back showing how to flush the torque converter and oil cooler, very simple process. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Oh yeah, dropped the pan, changed the filter, cleaned everything up incl the 4 lil magnets. Refitted with ultra blue gasket maker and refilled using the correct procedure. A full flush from the cooler wouldn't be a bad idea. Would it pump all the fluid out (8.8 litres or so) if I disconnected the pipe? Or would it just empty the sump and stop, maybe 4 litres.

Sorry, 6litres for the refill. When I said partial, I meant that I only replaced 4 litres out of the 6 (put 2 litres of the used oil back in). At the time I wasn't sure how much I'd need so I only bought 4 ltrs of the full synth fluid. I figured it can't be all bad as the fluid is meant to be sealed for life. The viscosity of the old fluid seemed similar to the new. Once you've driven a Range Rover, everything else seems 2nd rate.. Eeeek I'm trapped for life.

Ok. I have put 2 tubes in over the space of 2 weeks, I have noticed an improvement, normal driving is a lot better but still have to be real careful when towing.. the shuddering has changed its character a little as well. previously it was more of a cattle grate noise at 30 - 40kph, now the vibrations have become further apart.. more like driving over those warning ripples before you come to a T intersection at speed on a country road.. hard to explain. Thinking it could even be a gearbox mount.
