Hi everyone,
I've recently bought a l322 td6 which has intermittent instrument gauges. They could work all day, turn off at some point or not come on in the morning. It is the fuel, revs, speedo and temperature analogue gauges. The fuel reads low with the light on. No warning lights on. They can come back on with a ignition off and on reset or need longer. The rev counter seems to bounce a little when started and then settle at 0. Has anyone encountered this before? I've had a search but struggling to find much help. Thanks for any advice!

Has nobody come across this? It seems to happen maybe once in ever 5 starts and takes stopping and leaving the car for a bit to forget it doesn't want to work. My alternator is putting out 14.2V so the battery is assumed ok but maybe it could do with a proper test?

While my dials are OK, the digital display used to suffer from a similar fault, it was either on or off and nothing I did made any difference to it and it wasn't just the standard pixel issue either. It's now permanently off.

I phoned up a couple of companies that specialise in repairing instrument clusters, and was told that the 2004 year are notorious for components failing in the cluster, so now I need to extract the cluster and send it off in the next couple of weeks to be refurbed.

It maybe that the analogue dials suffer a similar problem, probably best give a repair company a quick call to see if they have seen it before. I will be using Cartronix, but there are plenty about. David

Do the general backlights work or do they flicker in time with the dials dying to zero. V8 or else ...

No flashing it appears. It happened this morning working for around 5 seconds and then died. The speedo, temp and fuel all die instantly but the revs pulse while dropping.

So..gently pulsating fuel, revs and water but flaccid speedo.

I've just spoken to cartronix who say it isn't something they would be able to work with. Presumably indicating a fault elsewhere?

Hmm interesting.

It smacks of a loose connection or something gone within the cluster to me which is common to the dial gauges. The gauge signals appear to be fed by the blue connector into the back of the cluster. The power appears to come from the other one ( white connector I think ).

If it were something like a poor external earth in general from the wiring, then given that the power / earthing comes from the white connector, you would expect ALL the lights in the cluster and similar to flicker like the gauges. ... they don't appear to do that.

Which leaves the common factor being the gauge signals ... and looking at the wiring, the only commonality between them is the the instrument cluster itself. Its not unheard of for the board on the cluster to fail, or at least components of it such as capacitors ( google search brings this up ).

I will try the 'self test' check tomorrow, is that the test you mean? I've just realised maybe my headlight 'on' light didn't appear to be illuminated but I had auto headlights on which were on. I'll check this tomorrow once it's all working again and see if it comes on then. Would this help any diagnosis?

the self test stuff should flick the guages through their whole range of motion and back to zero. its a long time since i did mine.

I have 2005 Vogue SE and have recently started experiencing exactly the same problems as Richycsurfer with the analogue dials not working more often than not. My problem is exactly the same as described in this post.
I was wondering if you found the root cause of the problem and what the solution was? Thanks.

Unfortunately I didn't yet... I've lived with it since however did have some advice to check the earth to the gauges, something which I havnt yet done
. I also heard I could swap out the gauges for another set without much problem?

I am thinking of getting a GPS speedometer as I pass through a lot of speed cameras each day and can't trust the dials anymore.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but did you ever get to the bottom of this? My fathers 2005 FFRR Vogue SE has recently started doing the exact same thing.
