It sounds more like a dodgy battery terminal connection after you have fitted the new starter motor.

Thanks Mike. I did double check them and ran sand paper over both the terminals on the battery and on both the positive and negative leads. |

Their is one old post on here where someone reported that the lead from the battery down to the starter was faulty.

So another night under my pride and joy. The starter I bought is just off fleabay. The brand is aapolham. It comes with 12 month warranty and was £134 shipped.

I suggest that you replace the starter relay (6E - engine bay fuse box). |

Thanks for you reply Graeme. I swapped the relay over with the heated windscreen one I think it was as it is the same. That didn't help. |

The thread in the Wiki for replacing the 3.6 starter mentions that the wire from the starter relay to the solenoid on the starter motor needed to be replaced due to excessive voltage drop. Was your 8.5V measured while trying to start with the new starter when there was load on the wire? |

Yeah it was 8.5v with load on it.

I did cut the end off that ignition wire last night thinking if it would be corroded it is probably most likely and the bottom where it is exposed to more salt and moisture. It looked fine and I soldered a new end on but maybe its further up the wire..... |

The relay is only to power the starter solenoid although it may take a circuitous route.

Thank you for your reply and advice Graeme. I will update once I get a chance to change the ignition wire. |

The wiring schematic shows for the wire run:
