Any iTunes experts

I backed up my old iPhone 6 onto my PC, then wiped it as it was going in for a new screen and battery with the intention of reloading it/syncing it once it was back.

Plugged iPhone into PC, and it asked for the encrypted password, which I'm 99.9% certain i didnt set Censored Tried my usual Apple password, my iTunes one and even all my ususal passwords and combinations (fortunately it doesnt time out after X amount of attempts)

Had a google and it seems some iTunes allocate an encrypted password without you knowing, I've asked Apple and they were no help at all, in fact I've asked them several times.

does anyone have any idea how i can retrieve what I've got backed up please? Im gutted as theres about 4 years worth of holiday photos, dog photos etc on there

Huge lesson learnt i know.....

Sorry I cannot offer any more than this. I'm pretty tech-savvy but Apple s/w bends my brain. So...

Not long after I got my first Apple device I realised I could not stand iTunes, and found a better tool for ipad/pod/phone from a company called CopyTrans, you could drop them a line and see if they have any software to help with this. I paid them $20 for their app and have been using it ever since. Never been presented with the issue you are having. Good luck.

Could it simply be referring to the screen password you’ve to type in when you turn it on?

No idea what's happened here but these sound wrong.

When you restore an iphone from a bog standard (non encrypted) backup via iCloud or iTunes, it wants your Apple ID password. Nothing else. It MAY also ask for an password for an additional Apple ID account for example IF you have content (music, video etc) downloaded from Apple Music using someone else's account. You can skip. Not required.

There is literally nothing whatever in Apple's credential systems that would cause "iTunes [to] allocate an encrypted password without you knowing", where did you get this "information"? Any backup can optionally (your choice) be encrypted. Did you encrypt your backup? If you did, it MUST have asked you to save a recovery password. That's NOT anything else, did you do that? If so, find where you recorded it. If you did encrypt it, and failed to record the password, bad luck. The whole point of encryption is, well, to stop people accessing it without the password.

Also, ref your lost photos, appreciate that you feel the pain here but... why aren't you syncing them automatically? One checkbox, that you must have turned off. Graham

Have you tried the Genius Bar ?

Worst case, book an appointment with the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple store ?

Mr B
I think u are b******d I did that when I changed phones... fortunalty I stumbled across the old PW & got out of jail. The visit to the shop might help, but I remember reading whilst I panicked, Apple can’t retrieve the PW Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Apple certainly cannot retrieve a password.

We don't currently know for sure which one the OP needs but it *sounds* like it's an encrypted backup. Graham

Agree - Apple can’t retrieve something you encrypted and put a password on.

I also agree that I’ve never heard of them automatically encrypting and password protecting without at least asking and getting agreement

In person, in a shop, you may get someone who will try a few other things and ensure it’s not you missing something obvious.

Do you have any other Apple devices ?

When I was moving to ios13 on my iPhone 6s, I backed it up, with the encryption set to on, so I could reset it to give enough space for the upgrade. I’m 99.9% certain it didn’t ask me for an encryption password but when I upgraded to the new iOS, I then restored from the same PC and the only password it requested was my iTunes account password. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

To be specific... if I remember correctly. when backing up, u can opt to choose encryption by box ticking, then create a PW. Which was the iTunes PW of the day . That was a long time ago, and my PW to I tunes changes as I forget them on a regular basis. So whilst changing the iTunes P W, it didn't change the encryption PW. I made a note of both once I stumbled across the old one.

I stand to be corrected on the above , Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

Yes, 1 and the same.
In this instance, does it specifically refer to the encrypted password? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
