Hi,
New here and on the hunt for a decent 4.2 Sc. Went to look at one yesterday with low miles but what appeared to be fairly bad corrosion around the rear wheel arches and down into the sills. Realistically is it a fairly simple repair for a body shop as everything else seemed spot on 👍🏼

Welcome to the forum.

There's a few threads on this if you search here on the forum. Appears to be a well known area for corrosion, if minor then can be halted if caught. There don't appear to be any replacement panels/sections available and if its fairly extensive it looks like a big job or a walk away.

That’s what I thought but I thought I’d see if there were any real world experiences of similar repairs. It’s a shame so many of these are rusting so badly, I was very tempted as it’s priced well but I have the feeling that I’d be opening a can of worms!..

Don't be put off having found one with rust that may be too much to repair. Keep looking and the right one for you will be found. In general these cars a great, but as you will find going through the posts and topics on here, a service history is most important when buying. You have already found what I think may be the most likely area of corrosion, other than someone who launches boats into the sea and leaves the car with salt all over it.

I am pretty used to sorting corrosion as I have had quite a few Defenders over the years, I just have 0 experience with the Rangies. After how much I enjoyed the test drive yesterday I’m considering shifting a few bits and upping the budget to a 5.0 SC. I did like how the 4.2 drove though, the engine certainly suited the vehicle 👍🏼 I’m in no rush and the search is always fun!

Factor the repairs into the purchase price, buy it fix it.

The later the cars, the worse the rust issues im afraid! That said, the early cars are older so have had longer to rot! What im trying to get at is, i have worked on 2-3yr old FF's all through the life of the 322 and the later models rust quicker than early models (BMW = good steel! Ford = Not so good steel! Ta Ta = ahem!!! Rubbish steel!) so if you up your budget to a 5.0 and its lived in say, Scotland! It may well have far more rot than an 06 London 4.2!

Well worth checking the history of where the car has lived geographically!

Oh and one more point... Buy a forum members car! Most enthusiast owners join forums, learn issues and how to avoid long term issues! Like treating areas for impending rust!

Have a good look around and find a good one. Like Camtech said, I bought an '06 4.2 and it has no rust at all yet. I wax injected that area and repainted a few really minor surface bubbles following a bare metal rub down, so hopefully it'll be solid for a fair few years yet. Slowly working my way through the whole vehicle. -Did all under the rear wheelarches while I was at it. Front brakes to do soon, so the front arches will be next. Wash, rub down if needed, paint with smoothrite, then underseal over the top of that.

I’ve found another 4.2 that ticks the boxes in Stornoway grey, a tad newer on a 58 plate with the newer interior but with better history/ maintenance and 0 rust. What is the difference between the non piped and piped leather? This one has the cooled seats.

Ahh, I’ve had a search and worked out it’s the softer aniline leather without the piping!

Well I’ve put a deposit on a good one, it’s a 58 plate 4.2 Autobiography in Stornaway grey. I’m off to collect it later this week. It’s got a full comprehensive service history and it’s had the gearbox service so fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Thanks for the link Stan 👍🏼 It’s a small world! Looks like it was looked after very well by the previous owner too! Did you have any issues with it? I think since you had it it’s had a new rear calliper a new windscreen and the gearbox has been serviced as well as obvious oil changes etc. It’s spent the last three years in Hyde in Hollingworth. Spec wise very happy, looks a very well equipped ff 😁👌🏼
