Water leak through boot hinges into electrics.... Woes

Morning guys.

Out of the blue jumped I’m my car this morning and as soon as I pulled away the rear d pillar speakers in the boot started making horrible noises.

Crackling. High pitched ringing just horrible.

Got half way to work and pulled over checked the rear boot compartment on the passenger side and saw this?

I’m guessing water has gotten in?

The noise from the speakers was even continuing when I turned the car off.

Question is what do I do now?

How do I find the leak

How do I stop it. ?

Had the car since feb and it hasn’t leaked yet could it just start out of the blue?

Just to add a additional note incase anyone brain storms like I said hasn’t leaked since I’ve owned it and this weekend it was in for 2 stage paint correction and ceramic coating. Not sure why / how that would affect it but weird it’s started 2 days after? Regards

I wonder why this isnt cured since 2002????
They say it leaks from left corner of the trunk.
Take good contact cleaner and try to clean connectors.
If amplifier or subwoofer electronics got wet they need to be dried and cleaned too. 2010 3.6tdv8 180k km.

I don’t know which connectors to dry bud?

I’ve also read a little about the boot seal? Is this just the big main rubber seal you see soon as the boots open? Regards

Sunroof drains
Tailgate Seal (inc stuff and muck around the seal)
Rear Side Window seals top,side,bottom

Could be that your detailer was over zealous with the pressure washer on the decontamination clean and forced water in, where under normal use this wouldn't happen, and it took a day or two to trickle down .

Thanks for the reply guys.

Ive taken it straight over to my local dealer. I’ll keep you all updated.

I didn’t know where else to take it locally and I didn’t want to chance anything electrical popping especially with the weather at the moment thought it’s best to get fixed ASAP. Regards

I just had a thought. Back in the summer I removed the horrid roof bars that were on there and replaced the gutter mouldings / trims ? Regards

All the connectors of amplifier and speaker and other components you have in there.
You have to remove some trims but easy. 2010 3.6tdv8 180k km.

just thinking out loud, but the rear speaker making these horrid noises will be connected to the water right?

Wont be a separate issue? Regards

The speakers making noises will most likely be damp in the amp or connector and nothing to do with the speakers themselves.

The official 'fix' for leaks in that area was to fit a plastic water shed over the top of the electronics...in other words to not fix it and just redirect the water, nice!

Yeah I already have this sheet lol. So not sure if it’s coming in from somewhere else or if the sheets failed or what.

I kindly said to the guy at the dealers I really want this leak fixed and not just a work around. Fingers crossed.

I wonder would my 2011 have come fitted with this sheet from factory? Regards

A little update for anyone whos interested however its not a good update:

Car was booked in for diagnosis of leak at the main dealer, my thinking behind this was they will no what they are doing to a decent standard, now i feel like a idiot..

Over the phone when booking it in. Myself and the guy on the phone had a in depth chat and settled on car was booked in for 1 hours worth of water leak diagnosis, if a good diagnosis couldn't be reached within that time then they would call me to authorize more time / money to spent on diagnosis...

So i patiently waited and then out of the blue i received a txt message with a link to this video which is laughable...

https://video.citnow.com/vxpQsZ1_0kY

So after i watched the video and half of me laughed hard whilst half of me got very angry... I calmly called the service department and said.... Im not being rude but please tell me where my 1 hours worth of labour has gone because from what i can see the tech has removed the spare wheel, removed the side cover for the electronics and poked his head in,.... Oh and i am not paying for anyone to tell me how much Tyre and brake pad life i have left... Oh and please tell me how you expect to find let alone fix a leak when you haven't even got the car wet.

The guy i spoke to was very helpfull and told me he would investigate, after 15 mins he called me back and agreed the tech had not done enough work to warrant 1 hours labour and that he was infact jaguar trained and not specifically land rover trained and in fact wasnt really too clued up on range rovers let alone l322;s so now apparently the dealers best tech will work on my car once he has finished rebuilding the head of a defender...

I dont know weather to laugh or cry Regards

It might yet come to that DrRob.

Would anyone have any insight to as weather the amp which we believe is the cause of the crackle and high pitch noise will be ok when it dries?

I’m guessing it’s only the connections which are wet causing the horrid noise through the speakers. Regards
