Advice please, lower tailgate switch

I have an intermittent problem where the switch on the lower tailgate doesn't unlatch the tailgate, however if I press the tailgate button on the fob it opens every time.

I'm suspecting the actual switch is faulty and Dan has kindly quoted for a new one but at £56 I didn't want to part with my cash unless I'm certain. Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

+1 as per GGDR

I've not had the switch out, but If the lower gate doesn't operate on the pushing of the "rubber" button on the tail it may be that the cover does not properly push down on the switch. Perhaps check that it will operate when the cover "rubber" is off and you have access to the switch directly. A bit like the wearing down on a remote that sometimes happens, the little button on the inside of the cover reducing in length. Not a good explanation, but you shoud work it out. Confused Cheers

Thanks for your replies, I have acquired a multimeter but don't know what to set it at. Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

Have the meter on resistance, (may be an OHM sign or a buzzer) and check its reading when you touch the probes together.

To trest the switch on its own, remove it from the lower tailgate. Remove the connector and if there are two wires into the switch connect the meter across the switch terminlas. Operate the switch by hand and if you get the zero readgng or buzzer it should be OK. Reconnect the switch and operate it with the ignition on to see if it works the tailgate latches. If it does't, then the problem is a little deeper. Cheers
