Ive asked on an Audi forum (we have a 2003 A4 3.0 v6 petrol), but got very few responses and still couldnt find out after a search either........

So, thought I'd ask you boys, seeing as you're so helpful with the RR

where can i find out how much power steering fluid my car takes, if i want to change it? (any fluid capacity specification sites you use?)

And, how would i go about changing it? suck it out from the reservior, or drain it off from somewhere else?

Does it have a dipstick on the filler cap. I remember my BMW's had that.

As for draining I saw Edd China change the fluid on a car, 320 Touring if I'm not mistaken, and he undid a union at a low point in the system and let it drain out, did the union up and filled the system. Then turned power steering from right to left (sound familiar) until all the air had burped out of the system. Power steering back to normal. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

I have been all through ELSAWIN for the V6 no mention of capacity.

Suggest you get yourself a couple of litres and do what I did with a syringe:

Suck old fluid out of the reservoir until empty, refill to level with new fluid. Drive car for a day/while - using the steering
Repeat until fluid in reservoir looks like it is the new stuff.

My FFRR took @ 1.5 litres .

I topped it up (the reservoir was empty and steering was whining) and it only took about 200ml, done a load of left/right turns to get it through the system, then out for a 10 mile drive, checked again. all OK. Ive got a couple of 100ml syringes so will draw out as much as i can and replace it a couple of times (got 2 litres of the stuff, so may as well do a couple of suck out/refills

Incidentally, would the fluid level drop of a very long time, as in years? You know, for example if you had a Mrs who never checked it??

Probably - just a very small leak somewhere....

If the seals are leaking slightly , Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak is effective
Worth checking the hoses first though as these often fail 4.2 SC - sold , now bought back

I'm guessing the whining means a knackered PS pump? Any ideas what kind of job it is on a 3.0 v6 petrol Audi A4?

From the manual look like a bit of a nightmare

Remove bumper
V belt off (check rotation) & removing everything that entails...
Disconnect A/C compressor (but do not release pipes)
Remove PS pipes and clamp
Remove PS pump

Sounds easy enough, but there is not much space in there

Can't remember if it is front right or left .

Hi all

Late request for help again

Finally got round to replacing the PS pump and belt 2 weeks ago, have only driven it about 20 miles and its making a whining again. Checked the PS fluid level, thinking it may of taken more into the system (we manually primed the pump before fitting it, then primed in on the car before use) and it was a lime green colour, not the clear, dark green fluid colour we put in when we changed the pump?

Any ideas please guys?
