In my opinion a sim slot shouldn't be necessary for CarPlay to work. I used several cars with CarPlay and they just could connect to the phone without any sim on board... However, there is this post that says the sim slot is required for the update... for the cars up to 2018! https://www.ovalnews.com/2019/03/finally-h...ports.html Because MY 2019 RR have CarPlay as standard... This is very confusing...

i agree that they shouldn't be needed. I've driven loads of hire cars which have car play and dont as far as i know have a sim.

Reading up on it. It seems it’s mainly for WiFi hot spot use. But it can give better signal strength than mobile phone in car so might be useful. Uses car aerial which is stronger and external to car. You can do voip over WiFi calls more reliably than just calling from ur mobile where line might drop. --
