Have had a sniffer test done and ruled out the head gasket

Head gasket, if I remember, is normally white smoke & wouldn't leave oily deposits around the exhaust.

Smoking fixed by replacing the PCV valve. Took a few miles to burn off the residual smoke but running fine now. Nice cheap fix for less than £30.00.

My mechanic friend was making some enquiries and the PCV valve was mentioned by a colleague think we were talking about the BMW engine. Checked for the part and as it was only £25+vat bought one. PCV on the Jag engine is at the front and easy to access. Old one was full of oil as were all the pipes in and out and some other “inlet” pipes. Cleaned up pipes and fitted new PCV and smoke started to clear and was down to just a wisp after a couple of miles driving around. Have done about 20 miles now and no visible smoke. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t
